Dreamy woodland and ridges from the Grand Caunet

An easy walk that won’t put too much strain on your ankles. Much of the route follows a DFCI track, and a lovely section takes you through the woodland on a narrow but very passable path, without the risk of getting scratched. Those who love the woods will be in their element. You can see the Bédoule watchtower, the Cabanon du Marquis and the Cabanon des Gardes (with opportunities for barbecues over a wood fire in the huts).

Description of the walk

Start at the Grand Caunet car park.

(S/E) Follow the wall alongside the car park until you enter the woods and continue straight on along this very wide path (marked in red and white) until you reach the junction at tank number 23.

(1) Change to the GC112 path on the left, then pass cistern 117 to reach the Ceyreste reservoir. Shortly after a forest gate, on the path marked in yellow, you’ll arrive at a tarmac roundabout. Take the GC213 path on the right, running alongside the tennis courts.

(2) Before reaching the forest gate and the tarmac road, take a sharp right-hand bend and continue to follow the yellow markings (towards Pas d’Ouiller).

(3) The GC213 is still marked in yellow. You will see a forest gate on the left with a path leading down. Take the path climbing up to the right, which leads to a shortcut after the second hairpin bend.

(4) Take the small path climbing up to the right to cut across the hairpin bends (shortcuts). Stay on this small path which crosses the main track. Then follow the hairpin bend in the road and take the first path on the right. Cut across the forest track to rejoin it further on and follow it straight ahead. Reach water tank number 116 and keep going straight.

(5) Then take the first path on the right. It is clearly marked in yellow. When you rejoin the track, follow the yellow markings which veer off to the right before turning left again. At the first two junctions, keep left.

(6) At the junction of several small paths through the woodland, take the path that winds steeply uphill to the right.

(7) At the fork, take the path on the right. When you reach the GR®98, follow it to the right to arrive in front of cistern number 115. The markings change to sky blue. You’ll come to some signposts; keep left towards a green bin, which was donated by the Lions Club in 2017. Continue straight ahead at the star-shaped junction.

(8) At the junction, take the path climbing up to the left. This is the GC109, still marked in sky blue, white and red.

(9) At the Cabanon des Gardes, behind the watchtower hut, take a short detour to the left towards the watchtower and then retrace your steps.

(9) Continue along the path on the GR®98 and the GC109.

(10) At the crossroads of tracks after the cistern, leave the GC109 on the right to take the shortcut. Join the track a hundred metres further up and follow it to the right towards the hut.

(11) Continue on and pass water tank number 63.

(12) At the junction with a path, continue straight ahead on the main path until you rejoin the path you took on the way there.

(1) Follow it back in the opposite direction to reach the car park (S/E).
