Route des Marais de Grand-Lieu to Saint-Mars-de-Coutais

During this walk, you’ll pass meadows, vineyards and forests lined with pollarded trees. Halfway along the route, you’ll pass through Bois Joli, which certainly lives up to its name. The icing on the cake is the finale in the marshes, on the edge of Lac de Grand-Lieu. Wildlife, flora and landscapes to discover: a complete change of scenery is guaranteed.
Depending on the season, you’ll walk along sandy paths lined with ditches and meadows grazed by cattle in summer and much loved by birds all year round.

Description of the walk

The route starts in the village of La Berderie.
To get there: from the village of Saint-Mars, head towards Machecoul. After about 5 km, take the road on the left, then continue straight on to park at the far end of the village.

(S/E) Walk up through the village to the Saint-Mars–Machecoul A-road. Cross it carefully and, a few metres further on, you’ll reach a crossroads with a footpath.

(1) Take the path on the left; it is a grassy track. Continue until you reach a T-junction with a stony path.

(2) Turn right onto it towards Les Grandes Vignes, then Les Pains Bénis.
Cross a local road, then at the edge of a wood, turn right. Walk alongside the wood and the hamlet of Bois Joli. You’ll reach the junction with the D64.

(3) Cross this road carefully, then head straight ahead. Reach the edge of another woodland.

(4) Turn right at the edge of the woodland to join the Chemin de la Messe.
Cross a local road. Reach the lower part of the village of La Pohérie. Turn left and you will soon reach the Levée des Platanes.

(5) Here there are two options depending on the season:
- continue straight on towards the Grand-Lieu marshes (this is the route shown on the map); shortly afterwards, you’ll reach the junction with the sandy path,
- if the area is flooded, take the road on the right to walk alongside the flooded marshes.

(6) Take the sandy path on the right. After walking in a straight line, you’ll reach the riverbank. Turn right and, a few metres further on, you’ll find the car park for the village of La Berderie (S/E).

Notes

Thefirst part of the route offers a glimpse of the bocage and vineyards. Then, in fine weather, you cross the marshes of Lac de Grand-Lieu. If the area is flooded, you can follow the marshes along the road; the distance and quality of the scenery are similar.

The end of the route is in a marsh and is impassable after rain, but you can finish it on the road

The grassy path at the start is actually overgrown with 1.5 metres of brambles and tall grass, no doubt due to a lack of use. So we took the road instead and found our way back onto the route. In fact, some guidance on the distances between the various landmarks would be very useful. The poetic names given to the paths in the description do not appear on the map, nor on the paths themselves, nor on the IGN maps. We enjoyed these beautiful paths and the typical marshland scenery.

It’s interesting because there’s not much tarmac.
It’s brilliant to finish the walk by crossing the marsh if you follow the suggested route.
We’ve just done it again today before the water covers the marsh.

A pleasant walk. The country lanes are lined with a wide variety of vegetation: woodland undergrowth, lovely hedgerows, vineyards and fields of various crops, and so on. The marshland is flat and bare, typical of the area around Grand Lieu – we really enjoyed it. As well as the usual birds, we spotted a small flock of ibises.
There are few roads. We’ll be happy to come back.
