Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park behind the church (sign for the Maquis Bourgogne), walk past the church entrance, then take the road on the left. Turn right onto Rue Saint-Protais, then immediately left to reach the fountain and Rue d’Eichtal. Before No. 23, on the left, note a standpipe bearing the likeness of Pasteur.

(1) Turn left onto Route d'Armeau, continue straight on until the next junction, Rue du Moulin.

(2) Continue straight on. Pass the next path on your left.

(3) At the Fork in the road, turn right onto Chemin du Ponceau. Continue along the tarmac road that extends from it, towards the place known as "Le Gros Chêne". Then continue along the dirt track. As you pass, take a look at the information panel "Maquisards et sédentaires de la forêt d'Othe". Ignore the few paths on the right or left.

(4) As you approach the hamlet of Chapitre, turn left onto Route André Dussault. Ignore the side paths.

(5) To see the Maquis Bourgogne memorial stone, take Allée Jack Marsden on the right; continue for a few hundred metres and head into the woods on the right until you reach the stone.

(6) Then retrace your steps and continue the route by crossing Route André Dussault to take the path opposite. As you pass, take note of the sign “Parachute drops supply the Maquis”.

(7) At the end of the path, turn left onto the D122. Follow it for a few metres then turn immediately left. Continue along this path which joins the Chemin des Misois. Carry on straight ahead, then turn left onto the Route d’Armeau.

(3) Follow the route taken on the way there for a few steps.

(2) Turn right onto Rue du Moulin. Cross a small footbridge over the Ru Saint-Ange to reach Rue du Colombier. At the end of this street, turn slightly right onto Rue de l'Église to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

This walk is marked by information panels: “In the Footsteps of the Maquis Bourgogne”. This route invites you to follow in the footsteps of the Maquis fighters who settled in this part of the Othe Forest from January to August 1944. Indeed, two Maquis groups established themselves there and fought from there. They belonged to different organisations but shared the same name, “Bourgogne”. Information panels allow you to discover what life and the struggle of the Maquisards and Resistance fighters were like in the farms, hamlets and villages.

Things to see in Dixmont:
The town’s heritage is remarkable and ancient. The two main monuments are the12th-century Church of Saint-Gervais and Saint-Protais and the Priory of L’Enfourchure. The church and some of its furnishings have been listed as Historic Monuments since 1967. The Priory of Enfourchure, a private property, was founded in 1209 by Count Guillaume de Joigny; it was given to the Order of Grandmont, a 12th-century monastic order. The building has been listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1926.

Nearby attractions include the Bollée windmill and the Apple and Cider Museum in Vaudeurs, as well as the “Cider and Press Route in the Pays d’Othe”.

A pleasant little walk steeped in history.
Expect to find yourself wading through tall grass on some of the paths across the fields. Rain or shine, the vegetation is thriving...
