The Mills and Vineyards Route in Saint-Georges-sur-Cher

This route lies at the heart of vineyard landscapes. Vine growing was already the main industry in the Middle Ages, and these ‘clairet’ wines were enjoyed throughout France. The wines were transported by boat from the port of Saint-Georges-sur-Cher. The numerous vineyard huts or shelters remind us of how winegrowers organised their work in days gone by. These served as places of rest and shelter for the workers and their horses, who toiled from dawn until dusk.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the large car park on Rue de Verdun.

(S/E) From the car park, set off along Rue de Verdun, which runs between the town hall and the church. Cross Rue du Général de Gaulle (D17) at the pedestrian crossings and follow it to the left.

(1) Turn slightly right onto Rue Maurice Curie, which runs alongside the cemetery. At the corner, turn right onto Rue Clément Bayard, then take the first path on the left heading south-east to reach a crossroads of footpaths.

(2) Turn left onto a path, cross the D127 and continue along Chemin de Tabureau. At Route du Mesnil, turn right.

(3) 300 metres further on, turn left onto the Chemin du Mesnil towards the Moulin de Mesnil.
Pass through the magnificent setting of the mill on the Ruisseau le Senelles. The site of the Moulin du Mesnil was a very ancient fiefdom that belonged first to the Lord of Bléré and then to the Lord of Montrichard. The main house was built on the foundations of ancient Roman structures.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right, then veer right again and pass close to the Moulin du Porteau as you continue along the Route du Porteau. The setting is magnificent. This was the last mill to cease milling operations in 1973.

(5) The Porteau farm was also granted permission, by an order of King Louis XVIII in 1823, to build a small wheat mill on a diversion of the Senelles stream.
Turn left and continue along the route towards Le Petit Maré, then turn right onto a path leading to La Grange Rouge.

(6) Walk through this hamlet, then continue along a path that veers to the right 150 metres further on. Under the power line, turn right and carry on straight ahead towards the D127.

(7) Cross the D127 and take the grassy path opposite, which joins a road at La Pierrerie.

(8) Turn right and head north for 250 m.

(9) Just past a large vineyard, turn left onto the grassy path which leads you to the banks of the Ruisseau de Senelles through lovely, lush green woodland, until you reach a ford.

(10) Carry on across the footbridge, cross Jarnac following the signposts and head straight on towards the vineyards along the path heading north-west.

(11) Turn right between the vineyards heading north-north-east and enjoy the vineyard scenery, keeping an eye on the signposts for 2 km. You’ll come to a road.

(12) Turn right, then almost immediately left, and continue straight on through the vineyards. At the next junction, veer to the right and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Follow the path back along the same route as on the way out to return to the car park (S/E).

This is an easy and pleasant route. The paths alternate between grassy and stony sections, with very few tarmac sections. Walking shoes with good soles are recommended.

A lovely walk during which we pass by beautiful country houses and old mills, vineyards and small woods – in short, it’s the countryside, with some lovely views of the valley on the way back. The only downside is that there are several tarmac sections, but it’s hard to avoid them.
Enjoy the walk, everyone;;;

A lovely walk starting from Saint-Georges.
The walk begins with some lovely stately homes, mills, … and then the vineyards.
