The Mas-d'Azil dolmens trail

Le Mas-d'Azil is a site rich in prehistoric remains. This trail takes in three very well-preserved dolmens, while offering a fine view of the Ariège Pyrenees and surrounding hills.

Description of the walk

Park in the Place du Fond de la Ville, next to the Arize.

(S/E) Cross the bridge at the end of the square and take the road that climbs to the left for about 300 m. Then fork left, following the signs for "Dolmens" on a wooden signpost, and climb up to the tarmac road at Cap de Pouech.

(1) Take the tarmac track on the right. This path climbs up and then bends around a hairpin bend.

(2) At the second bend, take the path on the left, following the signs for "Dolmens de Brillaud, Couminge" on a wooden signpost. After a short, fairly steep climb, the path returns on a false level through sparse oak woods and offers a beautiful, unobstructed view of the surrounding area on both sides.

(3) At the crossroads, turn left onto the path that quickly veers right towards the Brillaud or Seignas dolmen, which can be reached in around twenty minutes.

(4) Walk past the dolmen and continue for 4 km to the Sentier de Montfa crossroads, following the signs for "Couminge" on a wooden signpost.

(5) Turn left uphill onto the Sentier de Montfa: the Dolmen de Couminge is a few dozen metres on the left (it is not visible from the path, so go out of your way to see it). Take the gravel path to the right of the house, signposted "Camarade", go through the hamlet and then slightly downhill to the left. After less than a hundred metres, turn right towards "Camarade" on the path that leads down to the D15.

(6) Cross the D15 and turn right up the hill for about 200 m, then turn left onto the path which runs below and continues along a grassy track to the D915.

(7) Turn left onto the D915 towards "Lézères" for approximately 200 m, cross this road and continue along the path which descends to the right and crosses the Ruisseau de Camarade at a ford which is often dry. Join the hamlet of Cazalas, which you cross by following the small road to the left.

(8) At the end of the hamlet, continue towards the hamlet of Lézères, go straight through it and join the D15. Follow this road to the right for 500 m.

(9) Leave the D15 and take the small road that climbs to the left towards Seignas de Dessous. After 200 m, leave this small road and turn right onto the path that leads to the Lapostoul farm.

(10) Pass to the right of the new house next to the farm and continue for a few dozen metres up the gravel path. At the drinking trough on the right, go through the fence that opens up and head towards the wooden gate a few metres above the drinking trough. Go through it and take the slightly uphill path that leads to Millorat farm after joining a small tarmac road.

(11) At Millorat farm, turn left onto the track (wooden sign for "Dolmens") and continue until you reach the intersection with the small road to Bidot.

(12) Turn right as far as the Cap de Pouech dolmen, visible on the right.

(13) Continue along this road past the dolmen to the fork in the road where the descent begins.

(1) A hundred metres or so after the start of the descent, turn right onto the Chemin de Mathilde, which descends fairly steeply to Mas-d'Azil, where you must cross the Arize and rejoin the D119.

(14) Almost immediately, turn left into Rue Grande Route, then left again towards the church and rejoin the starting point, Place du Fond de la Ville(S/E).

The 3 dolmens are very interesting. The path from Mas d'Azil to point 1 after heavy rain and snow is absolutely impassable. It's better to take the road that also leads to point 1. The rest of the route is pleasant despite some very slippery sections of greasy mud......

A very nice walk, but unfortunately it has to be done in dry weather... Note that it is signposted in yellow and that the route has been slightly modified: at point 10 of the description the route now passes to the left of the new house near the farm and climbs between the farm and the house. When you come to a light fence, turn right and follow the route as described, leaving the water trough on your right for a fairly long distance (40m?).

Lovely hike near Toulouse. Passage over a ridge with a view of the Pyrenees in November. ( 23 November 2024)
There was a lot of mud on the last descent, which was very slippery.

A very interesting walk, we started our circuit from the Cap de Pouech dolmen car park.
The only difficulty is at the very start of the hike to get to the ridge overlooking the Arize valley, which is not to be missed, and I can confirm that the final descent to the village is very slippery at this time of year.
At this time of year, the route is a little muddy before arriving at the Couminge dolmen, but you enjoy the descent to Camarade and the rest of the route.
There are very few tarmac roads, so this walk is best done in spring or autumn.
I recommend this route with two versions to suit all abilities.

Rather disappointed.
3 dolmens and a few views of the peaks aren't enough to keep things interesting for almost 16 km.

A very interesting, varied route in the heart of nature, the only difficulty being the return to the village at the end of the walk,
slippery descent in wet weather.

Loop with varied scenery. Beautiful views. The finish at Mas d'Azil is a little steep but not difficult. In all, we met 6 hikers in hot, sunless weather.

A varied route with beautiful views. We avoided the Chemin de Mathilde on the way back because it was raining
Thank you for this route.

This was a very nice walk on paths that are not usually shown on IGN maps, so it was a good opportunity to discover new paths. The route is mainly through woods and around pretty meadows. Some of the views of the snow-covered chain are well worth the diversions. We took the short diversions up to Mont Calbech, where you can enjoy a wide panorama of the Couserans and in particular Mont Valier and Maubermé. We had a wonderful time, thank you for this route.

Nice hike starting from Mas d'Azil, varied and undulating route. The 400 m difference in altitude needs to be adjusted to 600 m. Visit the cave at the end of the walk, use the car.

A very nice walk with views of the Pyrenees from the path on the ridge, at least in winter as there are no leaves on the trees. No great difficulty. The return to Mas d'Azil at the end via the "Chemin de Mathilde" should be avoided in muddy weather as this path is narrow and quite steep, so there is a risk of slipping. Otherwise, impeccable.

A lovely walk in the foothills of the Pyrenees, with its heritage (the village of Mas d'Azil and the dolmens), an outward route along a ridge offering fine views (towards the Pyrenees and the plain), and a more rural return via the valley.
There are muddy stretches, particularly near the ford and on the final descent, so you'll need to wear high boots.
After point 8, you pass through a small hamlet where a Beauceron dog farm is not very welcoming.
The route was completed in fine weather in 3 hours 45 minutes, without a break.
On the way back, I was accompanied by a big, friendly dog who followed me from point 5 to the village.
Thanks to the author of this route

beautiful route with fine views of the Pyrenees mountain range
poles recommended as many stones under the fallen leaves make the ground unstable at times
The stones are also slippery - good footwear recommended.
Otherwise, we saw the 3 dolmens on the route, which are well indicated in the description, but we did need to pay a bit of attention.

What a lovely walk, neither too difficult nor too easy for those who enjoy walking. What's more, we came across a deer, a snake, a peacock and, of course, our beloved cows... What happiness
I recommend
