Circuit of rediscovered paths from Moutiers-Saint-Jean

The Chemins d'Auxois Association offers you its first circuit created using paths that have been reopened by the association. This beautiful walk has been designed to make the most of the footpaths, dirt tracks and white roads that will allow you to walk far away from cars.

Come and discover trails you've never walked before! Our tours are unique and do not follow existing signposts.

They are also suitable for mountain bikes and horses.

Description of the walk

The circuit starts at the church in Moutiers-Saint-Jean. Several cars can be parked behind or in front of the church.

(S/E) With the church on your right, take the departmental road (D1). At the junction, turn left onto Chemin des Ormes and continue until you reach the cross.

(1) Take the left-hand path, which will become increasingly difficult to drive on, until you enter a small wood.

(2) When you leave the wooded area, look for a metal barrier straight ahead (due north) and head towards it in single file if there are several of you so as not to damage the crops (the owner has authorised passage on this condition). Once at the barrier, find a path on your right that joins the D4.

(3) When you reach the departmental road, turn left to reach the village of Saint-Just.

(4) At the first junction in the village, stay on the left-hand street. At the second junction, take the street on the right and follow it to the end.

(5) Opposite a hangar, take the first road on the right, then the first on the left (onto a track), leaving the hangar on your left. Walk straight ahead. Continue along this track. Pass La Vendue, then continue to a crossroads with the D103.

(6) Cross the road to rejoin the path and continue to the intersection (triangle) between a local road and the D1.

(7) Cross both roads and find another path that leads into the meadows between two hedges. Stay on the path until the end.

(8) Take the path on the right under the trees, keeping the hedge on your left until you reach the departmental road (D1). Cross it and follow it to the left until you reach a sunken path on the left.

(9) Take this path, heading south towards the Curey farm (opposite a path coming from Turley on your right). At the end of the wooded area, go through a gate (please close it behind you), then descend to a track. Be careful, this section is particularly wet, downhill and hollow. In winter, it is difficult to walk on without good shoes.

(10) Once on this road, turn left. Then descend along a pretty stone path until you reach a right-hand bend.

(11) Ignore the large road that goes off to the right in a hairpin bend and turn left to follow the field until you find the entrance to the path under the trees. Continue, passing the hunters' hut on your right at the end of the path. You will come to a road.

(12) Turn right and cross the Réôme via the small bridge. Take the path on your left until you reach the next paved road and its bridge, passing a sheepfold. Be careful, this path may be wet.

(13) Turn left, crossing the Réôme again until you reach Moutiers.

(14) When you enter the village, turn right at the intersection, then left to go up Grande Rue. Follow the Abbaye de Moutiers.

(15) Just before the porch, turn right. This will take you along the old rampart walk with towers still standing on your left and the Coeurderoy Gardens on your right (private garden). A few minutes later, you will reach the church square (S/E).

Practical information

Parking is available at the church in Moutiers, even for horse trailers in the car park to the north.
The circuit has few steep climbs and/or descents but requires good footwear in wet weather as several sections are close to streams or watercourses.

Be careful on the section between (10) and (11), which is particularly slippery in wet weather.

The circuit took 3 hours and 10 minutes for the experienced walkers in our team.

Several variations are possible, so come and discuss them with us.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information about the route or the association.
