Route of the chapels on the Plateau de Dina

A lovely, challenging hike starting at the confluence of the Var and Cians rivers, leading up to the Plateau de Dina whilst taking in four chapels along the way. Beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

Description of the walk

Shortly after Touët-sur-Var, park at Pont du Cians in the small car park on your right.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, carefully head up the Route des Basses Gorges du Cians opposite until you reach the first junction and marker 190.

(1) Turn left and begin the steady but gradual climb towards the first chapel, the Chapelle Saint-Joseph. The path is wooded and well-marked. Continue to the next junction and marker 189.

(2) Turn right towards the Chapelle Saint-Sauveur. On the way, pass by the ruins of the Chapelle Notre-Dame, which offers a splendid view of the gorges and the peaks of the Estéron: Monts Brune, Vial, etc. Arrive at the Chapelle Saint-Sauveur.

(3) Take the road on the left towards the Saint-Julien Chapel for about 200 m until you reach the stream.

(4) Take the path on the right, still heading towards the Chapelle Saint-Julien. Walk across the Plateau de Dina, passing a few old farmhouses and the remains of terraced fields. Continue to the next junction.

(5) Turn right towards the chapel. Continue straight on when you reach the track. Keep going until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Julien: open to visitors (see Practical Information). The well-maintained site offers a beautiful view and makes for a very pleasant picnic spot.

(6) Then retrace your steps, take the path straight ahead, and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(5) Continue straight ahead. At the track, turn right and join the tarmac road.

(7) Cross it and continue your descent. You will reach marker 189.

(2) Continue downhill and return to the starting point via the reverse route of the outward journey (S/E).

Hike completed on 30 December 2024. Cold in the morning but sunny on the Dina plateau.
Very beautiful and very wild. Worth doing again.

Our GPS showed a slightly lower elevation gain than expected – 864 metres – but a distance of just over 14.60 km; in terms of timing, that’s spot on.
A magnificent hike dotted with old, abandoned farmhouses that offer a glimpse into times gone by, and chapels, including the stunning St Julien chapel at the summit of the hike – the ideal spot for a picnic and a good nap.
A beautiful route with no difficulty for experienced hikers.

A walk through beautiful forests. The signposting is easy to follow. We’ll definitely be doing it again in the spring. Less of an elevation gain.

As mentioned, the start is steep, but it levels out considerably after that. An interesting route, particularly along the way, with chapels, farmhouses and terraced fields, as well as a few new rural dwellings. Unobstructed views
