Circuit of the cazelles of the Causse de Lanhac, southern loop

This hike is partly the same as the "Circuit des cazelles du Causse de Lanhac boucle Nord" hike. The route is the same for both circuits until (8). Marked with "Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS)" signs. A pastoral land, the Causse de Lanhac has preserved not only its fauna and flora but also an important heritage. No fewer than twenty cazelles are listed there. A volunteer association, attached to the Rodelle rural community centre, has been working for several years to restore these buildings, which have suffered the ravages of time. This hike will allow you to discover the southern part of the site.

Description of the walk

Park in the Bezonnes cemetery car park, near the war memorial. On the other side of the road is a sign explaining the Sensitive Natural Area.

(S/E) Head back up towards the crossroads, cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn left onto the D27 towards Marcillac for about 50 metres. Turn right immediately onto the path towards Coraly. Follow it for about 1 km (ENS signs) to reach the causse where you will find an imposing standing stone marking the intersection of several paths.

(1) At the stone, follow the Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) signs, taking the path on the left towards cazelle n°1, which is on the left (explanatory sign).

(2) Return to the path and continue to the left. Go to cazelle no. 17, which is on the left of the path, and continue straight ahead to cazelle no. 21 at the bottom of a sinkhole (explanatory sign).

(3) Retrace your steps to rejoin the path and continue left. After 200 m on the right, at a marker, you will find cazelle no. 16.

(4) Return to the trail, arrive at a more marked path and turn left for a few metres. Turn left again to reach cazelle no. 15. Return to the path and continue to the left. As you pass, go to cazelle no. 14 on the right.

(5) Return to the path, turn right, then right again after about 100 metres to reach cazelle no. 11 (stones planted in the ground).

(6) Return to the path and continue to the right. Leave the path on your left and continue straight ahead until you reach a drinking trough. Turn right to reach cazelle no. 9 a little further down.

(7) Return to the path, turn right to follow the watering hole and continue along the path to an intersection where the routeshared with the northern loop ends.

(8) Turn left, following the ENS southern loop signposts. Pass between a standing stone and a cairn (signpost on the stone) and follow the poorly marked path, signposted by cairns. After about 400 m, you will arrive at cazelle no. 6, located at the edge of the path.

(9) Continue following the cairns to cazelle no. 5. Continue along a dry stone wall to reach cazelle no. 4, on the left of the path.

(10) Continue, passing cazelles n°3 and n°2, until you reach an intersection with a more clearly marked path.

(11) Turn right (ENS signpost) and arrive at a new intersection with a wide path.

(12) Turn left onto this wide path, following the ENS signposts, and you will come to the large stone at the entrance to the causse.

(1) Keep right, going in the opposite direction, on the path you took on the way there, to return to the car park (S/E).

Easy hike with no elevation gain, no shade in summer and strong sun. Numerous shelters in the cazelles encountered.

Water point (tap) at the watering trough before cazelle 9.

The cazelles are numbered discreetly but visibly inside the building.
