Loop of the four estates in Sébazac

An easy hike on the outskirts of Rodez, allowing you to discover four mansions with remarkable architecture typical of the Causse Comtal, the limestone plateau of the Counts of Rodez. This region, with its strong agricultural tradition, is full of estates, including those visible here, which bear witness to a rich past.

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park opposite the church and town hall in Sébazac.

(S/E) Walk past the town hall, along the post office building and, after the road sign, take the road on the right which becomes the Sentier de Découverte (Discovery Trail).

(1) Look for the return path on the right, continue straight ahead to the bridge over the railway line and cross it.Leave a path on the left and continue on the tarmac road, which becomes a stony track.

(2) Ignore the path on the right for now, which you will take shortly, and continue to the Flars estate.

(3) Return to the track and follow it for about 350 metres.

(2) Take a small path on the left called Sentier de Flacet: be careful, the entrance to this narrow path is not very well marked, so pay attention. Follow this path along the edge of the Bois de Flacet until you reach the railway line, which you will follow for a good hundred metres.

(4) Opposite the pedestrian crossing over the railway line (closed), take the path to the left of the track, which leads to the Mézeilles estate.

(5) Walk along the estate wall and follow the road downhill. Cross the railway line and follow the road along the small path on the side of the road until you reach the junction with the D240. Turn right and walk carefully along the road for about 100 metres.

(6) Cross carefully and turn left onto a wide path: signposted "Fonteilles". Continue to a fork just after the fields marked by four stones.

(7) Turn right onto a path that leads back to the D240.

(8) Turn left and follow the footpath that runs alongside the road to the Gajac estate. Then turn left onto the dead-end road that leads to the hamlet and, after 150 metres, take the grassy path on the right that leads back to the path running alongside the D240.

(9) Turn left to follow this path (view of the estate) until you reach the sign indicating the entrance to the village of Sébazac.

(10) Carefully cross the D240 and take the path opposite. You will arrive at a tiny pond. First turn left then right to rejoin the road you took on the way there.

(1) Turn left onto it to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

During the hike

Sébazac: castle that once stood on the site of the current town hall. The current building was constructed and modified by Joseph Bouloumié inthe 19th century. His son Louis founded the Vittel spa in 1857: explanatory panel in front of the vaulted room.

(3) Flars: agricultural estate with an isolated farmhouse typical of the Renaissance. This estate is closely linked to the Fualdès affair, a public prosecutor who was assassinated in 1817.

(5) Mézeilles: vast agricultural estate dating from the 17th century. The house was rebuilt at the very beginning of the 19th century following a fire.

Gajac: large 19th-century mansion in the Second Empire style

Pleasant hike, but the estates are of limited interest
On the other hand, the trails are good with relatively few roads
Note: after the 5, before returning to the road, there is a small lake with a picnic table
