Route de découverte de Saint-Hippolyte

Saint-Hippolyte is located at the confluence of the Doubs and Dessoubre rivers in Franche-Comté. It is a small, picturesque tourist village at the gateway to the Pays Horloger (Watchmaking Country). The setting is enchanting: surrounded by the Jura mountains, the Dessoubre to the west and the Doubs to the north. The narrow streets are picturesque and the buildings are examples of the architecture of the Pays Horloger. It is of course possible to combine this short route with another discovery in the region.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind the post office.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the Pont du Doubs bridge via the steps. Cross the bridge and turn right towards the town hall to cross the square and reach Rue Jacques Courtois. Follow this road to the right until you reach the church and Place du Chapitre. Walk around the square clockwise to return to the square. Go straight on Impasse de la Tannerie to see the information panel about the tannery.

(1) Turn back to return to the square and turn right onto Grande Rue. Follow it to the right, then turn right onto the D30 to see the Dessoubre.

(2) Turn back, cross the D30 and take Chemin des Baillets opposite. At the end, turn left and walk past the Franche-Comté lion.

(3) Continue straight ahead. When you reach Rue Saint-Ursanne, turn left and then take the second street on the left, Rue des Granges. At the first crossroads, turn right onto Rue des Sources to rejoin Rue Saint-Ursanne at the former Ursuline Convent. Turn right towards the convent.

(4) Take the passage on the left. Near the Doubs, turn left twice to return to Rue Saint-Ursanne. Turn right to go up Grande Rue on the left. Turn into the first passage on the left, then cross Rue des Sources before returning to Rue des Granges. Turn right, then continue left, taking the stairs. Continue along Rue Haute. At the end of the street, turn left down Rue Saint-Ursanne and pass the convent again.

(4) Continue to the end of the street, then cross the Doubs on the right. Immediately afterwards, turn left onto a path that descends to the confluence of the Dessoubre and Doubs rivers, passing close to the war memorial.

(5) Return to the bridge via the same path. Go straight ahead to reach the car park via the stairs (S/E).
