La Barse Route

Two villages notable for their heritage are linked by this route, which crosses the River Barse, winding through pastures and orchards – a landscape typical of the humid Champagne region. The path passes by the former abbey of Montiéramey and two manor houses in Montreuil-sur-Barse.

Description of the walk

Yellow markings

(S/E) Starting from the square in front of Montiéramey Town Hall, take Rue de l’Église on the right.

(1) After the church, turn right into Rue du Sablé Vert, pass the bus shelter and stay on the right-hand pavement.

(2) Turn left onto Rue de la Liberté, cross the bridge and turn left into the small street running parallel to the railway line. After about 300 m, take the path on the right through the orchards.

(3) When you reach the viewpoint, head right, then go down to the left and left again between the apple trees. Then go up to the left and continue straight ahead.

(4) At the road, continue to the village of Montiéramey.

(5) At the end of Rue de la Bretonnière, take the RD143 to the left. At the central crossroads, follow signs for Montreuil-sur-Barse via the RD106.

(6) At the entrance to the village of Montreuil, turn right onto Chemin de l’Église. Behind the church, take the path to the right then left to pass behind the properties through a landscape of hedgerow-enclosed farmland. Return to the tarmac and take the RD57 to the right.

(7) At the cross, take the path on the left towards the open countryside. At the first junction, turn left. At the end of the path, take the RD106 to the left to return towards the village.

(8) In the village, turn right onto the main street, passing the town hall and the manor house. On Rue du 27 août 1944, continue straight ahead, passing an elegant half-timbered manor house.

(9) Turn left at the first dirt track before leaving the village. At the T-junction, turn right then left to head back towards Montiéramey through the hedgerows, cross the rivers via the bridges and admire the architecture of the old abbey. Return to the starting car park, Place de Montiéramey (S/E).

A lovely, peaceful walk.
Lots of fresh air and greenery.
And magnificent architectural landmarks.
The bonus: a signposted route with reliable, easy-to-follow signposting.

On Friday afternoon (15 January 2021), I went for a walk along the Barse route, which you recommend starting from Montiéramey, passing by the Saint Gilles fountain and the village of Montreuil-sur-Barse. Winding through orchards and wooded countryside, it is a beautiful, varied and well-signposted route, generally without difficulty, but I wanted to point out that at the end of the walk, on the way back through the wooded countryside, the path is flooded for 200 metres before entering the village. The water came up to just above my knees. For walkers passing through here at this time of year, just a quick heads-up so you aren’t caught out like I was.
I’m sending you the IGN map with the flooded section circled in purple (give or take 50 metres – I’m not very good with maps): https://ibb.co/D8F7tPc

Despite the bad weather, this walk is very manageable (not much mud). It is of architectural interest and offers varied scenery.
Please note that between points 4 and 5, the markings are yellow (not yellow and white).

Walk taken on 10 November 2019 in overcast weather. A gentle, flat route, well signposted through the hedgerows and orchards... However, could the section along the main road between Montieramey and Montreuil (about 1 kilometre) perhaps be avoided? We only encountered two vehicles that afternoon, but during the week, there is somewhat more traffic. Recommended for families or those on gentle walks.
