Chjassu Maria Gentile between Poggio d'Oletta and Oletta

The Chjassu Maria Gentile is a pretty walking loop connecting the neighbouring villages of Poggio d'Oletta and Oletta. The route offers rich and varied landscapes: villages, scrubland, oak forests, streams...

Its name is a tribute to Maria Gentile, a young heroine of the area who became a symbol of courage when, in 1769, at the age of just 20, she defied French soldiers who had sentenced the inhabitants of Oletta to death for plotting a conspiracy. Maria Gentile's fiancé, like his companions, was sentenced to death and executed without the right to a burial. Maria, refusing to abandon her fiancé's body, decided to defy the ban and, at nightfall, set out to recover it and give him a proper burial. Since then, Maria Gentile has been considered the Antigone of Corsica.

Not to be missed during your visit
- The Saint-François convent : built in the late12th/early13th century, the convent once housed 18 brothers, including three priests and a few clerics. In 1769, it served as headquarters for the troops of the Kingdom of France who landed in Saint-Florent. Since 1974, part of the convent has been listed as a historic monument.
- The Rivarola tomb: from the path, perched at the top of Muzzellu hill, you can see the19th-century funeral chapel of the Rivarola family. The Rivarolas, who settled in Corsica (in Bastia and Oletta), were allies of Pascal Paoli.
- The Moulin di u Guallu: at the edge of the trail, you can see a stone water channel that fed the old Moulin di u Guallu, now renovated and converted into a dwelling. This mill inspired the Oletta lyricist Dumenicu Marfisi, who wrote the famous Corsican song " U Mio Mulinu ".
- The fountains: several old fountains dot the Maria Gentile trail. As you stroll along, be sure to read their history on the information boards.

This route around Oletta is very easy to follow thanks to the signposts. It is a hike of just under two hours with shaded trails and a good climb towards Poggio. Very pleasant!

The trail starts from the small path that descends to the Poggio d'Oletta fountain. There was some tall grass at this point, but the path is fairly shaded overall. From the convent to the village of Poggio d'Oletta, the trail is quite challenging. Otherwise, it's a nice hike for families.
