The starting point for the hike is Melun station (Transilien line R, between Paris Gare de Lyon and Montargis or Montereau; RER line D). Motorists can park in one of the station car parks (paying) or in the adjacent streets.
(S/E) From the main exit of the station (Place Gallieni), take Rue Dajot. Continue straight ahead until you reach Rue Doré. Then turn diagonally left onto Boulevard Henri Chapu.
(1) Go around Place Chapu on the right and follow Avenue Eugène Godin (D415a). Cross a branch of the Seine and arrive at the foot of the Collégiale Notre-Dame.
(2) Continue straight ahead and cross the second branch of the Seine. On the other side of the bridge, follow Quai du Maréchal Foch to the right and pass the war memorial.
(3) Shortly afterwards, turn left and walk along the river on your right. Cross the river when it turns left and walk along it on your left. When the river turns slightly to the left, take a path on the right and climb a staircase.
(4) At the top, follow Allée du Marché to the left. At the crossroads, go straight ahead along the river and then take a staircase. You will come out onto Rue Saint-Liesne. Follow it to the left and you will soon reach Place Saint-Jean.
(5) Turn right twice to take Rue Bancel. Shortly afterwards, turn right into Rue des Trois Moulins and go downhill. Continue straight ahead, ignoring a staircase and an alley on the left. At the traffic lights, continue straight ahead towards Guignes. Walk along the Parc de Spelthome on your right. At the next traffic lights, go straight ahead.
(6) Pass under the D605 bridge. On the other side, turn right onto Chemin du Bas des Trois Moulins. Ignore a turn-off on the right, then one on the left, and immediately turn left with the street. Cross a small road.
(7) Come out onto the D117, follow it to the right and immediately turn right onto the D117a (Rue de Praslin). Cross Rue des Trois Moulins on the right-hand side and continue straight ahead along Rue de Praslin. At a fork (elevation 68), keep right and walk along a wood on your right.
(8) At the entrance to a right-hand bend, leave the road and take a path on the right. Shortly afterwards, turn left and cross the woods heading north-east.
(9) Come out onto a small road and first turn left then right to cross it and take Impasse des Temps Perdus. At the end of the tarmac road, continue along a path through a wood. Ignore all the turnings on the left and you will come to a T-junction near the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte.
(10) Turn right and arrive at the corner of the Bassin de la Poêle.
(11) Turn right onto the GR®1 (red and white markings) and walk along a stream on your left.
(12) At the T-junction, turn left and cross the stream. Enter Maincy via Rue des Carmes. Continue along Rue Basse Poignet and then Rue du Lavoir.
(13) Turn right onto Rue du Four, at the corner of Place des Fourneaux. Then turn right onto Rue Thiers. Continue straight ahead until you reach Saint-Étienne Church.
(14) Continue straight ahead and take the first left, Rue des Trois Moulins. Turn left again onto Chemin du Fief de Mons.
(15) At the corner of No. 131, take a path on the right. After about 50 metres, turn right and continue for another 50 metres. Then turn left onto Rue André le Nôtre.
(16) At the fork shortly afterwards, turn left, then immediately right. Go through a gate, enter a wood and continue straight ahead (west) along Chemin des Mécontents. Continue along the edge of the wood on your right and ignore a path branching off to the left.
(17) You will come to a small road, Chemin des Ménereaux, and follow it to the left. At the T-junction, follow the road to the right and pass under the D605 bridge.
(18) At the crossroads, turn left onto Boulevard de l'Almont. At the roundabout, cross Route de Nangis (D408) and continue straight ahead onto Chemin de Bel Air. Then cross Route de Montereau (D416) and continue onto Avenue Georges Clemenceau. At the roundabout, turn left, still on Avenue Georges Clemenceau.
(19) At the next roundabout, turn right onto Avenue Saint-Just. Cross Avenue du Général de Gaulle and continue along Rue de la Libération.
(20) Opposite the gates of Château de Vaux-le-Pénil, turn left onto the avenue. At the corner of Place du 14 Juillet, turn right and follow Côte Sainte-Gemme. When the street turns left, go down the steps on the right. At the bottom, cross the D39 at the pedestrian crossing and you will reach the banks of the Seine.
(21) Then turn right and walk along the river on your left. Continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection you took at the start of the walk.
(3) Continue straight ahead along Quai du Maréchal Joffre. Follow the same route as on the way there, but in the opposite direction, to return to Melun station (S/E).
