The hike starts from Melun station (Transilien line R, between Paris Gare de Lyon and Montargis or Montereau; RER line D). Drivers can park in one of the station car parks (pay-and-display) or in the adjacent streets.
(S/E) From the main exit of the station (Place Gallieni), take Rue Dajot. Continue straight on until you reach Rue Doré. Then turn diagonally left onto Boulevard Henri Chapu.
(1) Go round Place Chapu on the right and follow Avenue Eugène Godin (D415a). Cross a branch of the Seine and arrive at the foot of the Collégiale Notre-Dame.
(2) Continue straight on and cross the second branch of the Seine. On the other side of the bridge, follow Quai du Maréchal Foch to the right and pass the war memorial.
(3) Shortly afterwards, turn left and walk alongside a river on your right. Cross the river where it bends to the left and now walk alongside it on your left. When the river curves slightly to the left, take a path on the right and then climb a flight of steps.
(4) At the top, follow Allée du Marché to the left. At the crossroads, go straight on along the river and then take a flight of steps. You will come out onto Rue Saint-Liesne; follow it to the left and you will soon reach Place Saint-Jean.
(5) Turn right twice to join Rue Bancel. Shortly afterwards, turn right into Rue des Trois Moulins and head downhill. Keep going straight on, ignoring a flight of steps and a narrow lane on the left. At the traffic lights, continue straight on towards Guignes. Walk alongside Parc de Spelthome on your right. At the next set of traffic lights, go straight on.
(6) Go under the D605 bridge. On the other side, turn right onto Chemin du Bas des Trois Moulins. Ignore a turn-off to the right, then one to the left, and immediately turn left with the road. Cross a stream.
(7) You will come out onto the D117; follow it to the right and immediately turn right onto the D117a (Rue de Praslin). Cross Rue des Trois Moulins on the right-hand side and continue straight on along Rue de Praslin. At a fork (marker 68), keep right and follow the path alongside a wood on your right.
(8) At the start of a right-hand bend, leave the road and take a track on the right. Shortly afterwards, turn left and cross the woodland heading north-east.
(9) You’ll come out onto a small road; first turn right then left to cross it and take Impasse des Temps Perdus. At the end of the tarmac, continue along a path through the woods. Ignore all the turnings on the left and you’ll reach a T-junction near the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte.
(10) Turn right and arrive at the corner of the Bassin de la Poêle. (At no. 10, you can turn left for 1 km to go to the castle entrance and then retrace your steps).
(11) Turn right onto the GR®1 (red and white markings) and follow a stream on your left.
(12) At the T-junction, turn left and cross the stream. Enter Maincy via Rue des Carmes. Continue along Rue Basse Poignet and then Rue du Lavoir.
(13) Turn right into Rue du Four, at the corner of Place des Fourneaux. Then turn right into Rue Thiers. Continue straight on to Saint-Étienne Church.
(14) Continue straight on and take the first left, Rue des Trois Moulins. Turn left again onto Chemin du Fief de Mons.
(15) At the corner of No. 131, take a path on the right. After about fifty metres, turn right and continue for another fifty metres. Then turn left into Rue André le Nôtre.
(16) At the fork shortly afterwards, veer left, then immediately right. Pass through a gate, enter a wood and follow Chemin des Mécontents straight ahead (west). Continue along the edge of the wood on your right and ignore a path branching off to the left.
(17) You will come out onto a small road, the Chemin des Ménereaux, and follow it to the left. At the T-junction, follow the road to the right and go under the D605 bridge.
(18) At the junction, turn left onto Boulevard de l'Almont. At the roundabout, cross Route de Nangis (D408) and continue straight ahead onto Chemin de Bel Air. Then cross Route de Montereau (D416) and continue along Avenue Georges Clemenceau. At the roundabout, turn left, staying on Avenue Georges Clemenceau.
(19) At the next roundabout, turn right onto Avenue Saint Just. Cross Avenue du Général de Gaulle and continue along Rue de la Libération.
(20) Opposite the gates of the Château de Vaux-le-Pénil, turn left onto the avenue. At the corner of Place du 14 Juillet, turn right and follow Côte Sainte-Gemme. When the street turns left, go down a flight of steps on the right. At the bottom, cross the D39 at the pedestrian crossing and reach the banks of the Seine.
(21) Then turn right and walk along the river on your left. Continue straight on until you reach the junction you passed at the start of the walk.
(3) Continue straight on along Quai du Maréchal Joffre. Follow the same route as on the way out, but in the opposite direction, to return to Melun station (S/E).
