Castle of Sant Salvador de Verdera and Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes

A short, easy circular route, even for children, to visit Sant Salvador de Verdera Castle and Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery. Very well-marked trails with superb views of the Mediterranean Sea and the region. Although the route is quite short, it is not shaded.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the GIP-6041.

(S/E) When leaving the car park, follow the road to the left for about 20 metres, then turn right onto the path. Follow the Violet route from Santa Creu de Rodes, which leads to the castle. You will reach the Church of Santa Helena de Rodes.

(1) Turn right onto the only path that goes uphill. After about 200 metres, this path leads to a larger path, which you should follow to the left for about 800 metres.

(2) Take the track that descends to the left and reach a fork about 60 metres further on.

(3) Follow the path on the right that climbs up to the Château de Sant Salvador de Verdera.

(4) After admiring the view, descend back to the fork.

(3) Turn right and continue downhill to the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes via the Orange route.

(5) Take the tarmac road on the left to follow the red trail and return to the car park (S/E).

A beautiful route with its ruins. Not too long, but there’s a section of rocky terrain that might be tricky for some (older people or those with weak ankles)

I'm sorry, but the hike is intended for adults and young people who are able to walk. It would indeed be difficult for a 3-year-old child.

The walk is described as easy, but despite being short, this is not the case. The section with the climb to the castle is a mountain path with lots of stones and large steps to negotiate. We did it with a 3-year-old child who had to be carried for about a third of the hike.

The description is not very precise, so we used the map to find our way.

Otherwise, it was a fabulous walk with magnificent views and scenery.
