Bellefont rock field from Perquelin

An unusual hike through the rocky outcrops of the Chaos de Bellefont. Expect a few short sections of easy climbing. You must follow the markings in the Chaos de Bellefont very carefully to avoid getting lost.

Description of the walk

Park in the hiking car park at the edge of the hamlet of Perquelin in the commune of Saint-Pierre de Chartreuse. This car park is located along the forest track at the end of the hamlet: do not go past the forest gate if it is open.

(S/E) Follow the signposted forest track until you come to a small stream. Cross it and follow the yellow hiking signs.

(1) Turn right towards “Fontaine Noire”. When you reach a sign for “Source du Guiers”, turn left in the opposite direction (the sign also mentions “Le Prayet”). You’ll come to a forest track.

(2) Turn left. Leave the track a few dozen metres further on to join a path that winds upwards to the right. From this point, the route is no longer signposted. Follow the switchbacks until you reach a cave which you can visit on the way (note that the route also passes in front of an arch).

(3) At the cave, take the path that continues to the right of it, then climb up a narrow gully via a path with tight hairpin bends. Reach the top of this gully.

(4) Leave the main path by taking another path on the left, marked by a cairn. Then follow this path as it runs along the cliff. Look out for red dot markings and follow them.

(5) Do not take the path that climbs up the chimney on the right at the end of the cliff; instead, follow the path marked with red dots which branches off to the left at the foot of this chimney. Here you will find the entrance to the Bellefont rock field: follow the markings carefully so as not to get lost until you reach theGR®. On this section, there are a few easy climbing sections to negotiate.

(6) Follow theGR® to the left and head for the Bellefont hut,

(7) Follow the signs for “Col de la Saulce”.

(8) Once at the pass, turn left towards “Perquelin”. Continue downhill, following the right bank of the Ruisseau de Bellefont, then cross it.

(1) Carry on to the right to reach the Perquelin car park (S/E).

As the ascent takes place through woodland, it had been twenty-five years since I’d last been there, and there are several different paths, finding your way requires a certain amount of care. The altimeter proved very useful in this instance, as the altitudes given in the guidebook for the various waypoints were accurate.

On emerging from the rocky scree, we took a different route to the one shown on the map; we continued by sight towards the Pas de Rocheplane and then the Cheminée du Paradis, before descending via the Pas du Glaz and the source of the Guiers, keeping the cliff on our right. This section between the Pas du Glaz and the source of the Guiers is in need of maintenance, as certain sections required a bit of care. It should be noted that a return via the Col des Ayes was out of the question (and still is at the time of writing), due to a landslide that occurred in late 2025, which led to the closure of the path linking the Trou du Glaz to the Col des Ayes.

A truly beautiful and long hike in the Chartreuse, in a very secluded setting, as we came across no more than four other couples of walkers in total, with the forest section offering the hushed atmosphere so characteristic of this mountain range.

From the car park, follow the source of the Guiers; after a few bends – it’s not signposted as ‘Fontaine Noire’ – turn right towards the source of the Guiers. Head uphill through the forest, then at the wooden sign, follow ‘Le Prayet’ (written in small letters with a felt-tip pen). Then follow the guidebook. Once you reach the rocky terrain at Bellefont, there are a few blue or yellow markers left; from there, where it’s marked ‘Crevasse’, the route is no longer signposted at all.You must head straight on across a steep, slippery section, then navigate by sight, keeping straight on whilst avoiding the holes. Once you reach a meadow, continue straight on and join the GRP (yellow markers) as far as the Bellefont hut and the signposts for the Col de la Saulce.
All alone in the world.

A lovely walk in a small, unspoilt corner of the Chartreuse; a chamois made our walk even more enjoyable. Clear instructions at key points such as the entrance to the Chaos, and the red arrow and blue dot markings should be followed carefully – be prepared for the short climbing sections, which are easy to manage. The section along the cliffs (as you leave the forest and before the entrance to the Chaos) is really lovely. It’s possible to bypass the Chaos and join the GR for those who wish to do so. Nothing but good things to say about this route.

An impressive and fun route. AND dangerous. Some of the climbing sections are certainly easy, but a fall would be fatal. In short, bear this in mind before setting off – turning back is tricky.
