This third stage is fairly short and relaxing. It allows you to enjoy Champex and its lake a little longer. After the village of Orsières, you will follow a forest path on the left bank of the Dranse d'Entremont, then on its right bank before climbing up to the village of Liddes.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this stage is the Hôtel Mont-Lac in Champex.

Markings: Alpenpässe Weg green stickers No. 6 - Chamonix Zermatt - (White-Red-White markings)

(S) From the Hôtel Mont-Lac, walk about 20 metres to the first signpost bearing the No. 6 sticker for the Alpine Passes trail. Follow these signs to a place called "chez les Reuses".

Markings: (White-Red-White)

(1) Turn right and follow the signs for Orsières. Descend to Orsières station.

(2) Heading east, cross the Dranse d'Entremont and join the Via Francigena.

Markings: Via Francigena green stickers No. 70 - (White-red-white markings)

(3) Turn right onto the Via Francigena and walk to a bridge over the Dranse d'Entremont.

(4) Cross the Dranse and begin to climb into the Montatuay forest. Continue south-east and reach the hamlet of Fornex

(5) At the exit of the hamlet, stay on the Via Francigena by taking the path on the right. Continue on path No. 70 to the hamlet of Dranse.

(6) Cross the Dranse d'Entremont, after two hairpin bends, arrive at the church of Liddes, take Rue de l'Eglise to the intersection with Rue du Fond de Ville.

(7) Turn right and you will easily reach the Hôtel du Grand Saint Bernard, your accommodation for the night (E).

A circular walk from Champex Lac; ascending via the Bisses to the Arpette valley and then taking the path uphill through forest to the Col de la Breya. Then descending and joining the path to the Cabane d'Orny (refreshments available). The descent is via the path back to the La Breya chair lift taking in an optional ascent of La Breya.

A circular walk from Champex Lac; ascending the tranquil and beautiful Combe d'Orny and joining the path to the Cabane d'Orny where there are refreshments available. The descent is via the path back to the La Breya ski lift taking in an optional ascent of La Breya. (It is also possible to descend by foot via the Val d' Arpette or from the ski lift, similarly the walk can be shortened and height gain reduced by taking the ski lift up.)

This 8th stage of the Tour Mont Blanc (TMB) offers two options, the tough one via Fenetre D'Arpette and the somewhat easier option over Porte à l'Ô. Here's the second version, past Plan de L' au, over Alpage de Bovine and Porte à l'Ô, past the Col de la Forclaz to drop down to Trient. Let's do it! The TMB is a classic long-distance footpath that goes around Mont Blanc, passing from France into Italy and through Switzerland before returning to France.
