Description of the walk

Park your vehicle in Caylus, as close as possible to Chemin du Marquisat, which you will take at the start. Parking is easy on either side of the D926 road.

(S/E) Take Chemin du Marquisat, which climbs steeply. You will immediately see theGR®46signposts and those for the inter-communal footpath, which you will find along the route.

(1) At the intersection, turn right 180° and, a few metres later, turn left between two wooden barriers. After a fairly steep climb, the trail levels out and heads north. At the fork, elevation 312, turn right, then straight ahead at the next intersection to reach another fork (calvary). Turn right downhill and head towards the pretty site of Notre-Dame de Livron.

(2) Turn right and follow the small road that runs alongside the stream for about 100 metres.
Then leave the road by turning right, cross the small bridge over the stream and continue along the path to the D19. Turn left and arrive at the bridge.

(3) At the end of the bridge, go down a few steps on the right and follow the stream, with the military site on your left. Once you reach the road, turn left and, at the fork immediately after, turn left to climb towards Les Cabannes.
At the crossroads at the top of the hill, leave the road and continue straight on theGR®46. The latter makes an almost 180° turn and straightens up to reach a small road.
Turn left to reach the beautiful site of the Notre-Dame des Grâces chapel. (Picnic tables). The view over the Bonnette valley and the hamlet of Les Cabannes, which you have just crossed, is well worth the detour.

(4) Turn back and cross the village of Lacapelle-Livron, where you can admire the 11th and 13th century Templar Commandery.

(5). Turn right and follow the road to the end of the village sign, then follow the D19 on the right for about 500 metres.

(6) Take the small path on the right that runs alongside the road and rejoins it at a calvary. Turn right.

(7) Shortly afterwards, turn right again between two pretty stone walls and walk on flat ground for about 1000 metres.

(8) Shortly after passing a ruin on the right and a stone wall a little further on the left, turn right onto a small, barely visible path. (Small yellowPR®2arrow on the fence). This fork is easy to miss, so pay close attention.
From here, leave theGR®46and follow the yellow and red markings of the GRP®. The path descends to join the D97, at an old restored mill.
Follow this road to the left for about 150 metres, turn right and cross the Bonnette bridge.

(9) After 100 metres, leave the road and take a wide path uphill on the left (no entry sign). This path leads to a fork, where you should turn right. It flattens out as it passes the ruins of the Saint-Caprais chapel, then descends again to join the D97.

(10) Turn left onto this road, then take a path on the right, cross the small stream and continue to the hamlet of Majac.

(11) Turn right, pass between the houses and a farm building and continue for 250m. Leave the road and take the path on the left, which runs across the plateau, almost flat.

(12) Once at the fork, turn left and continue straight on to the large farm buildings at Majanet. You will approach the road but turn left just before it to follow theGRP® which leads to a small road at a place called Les Chênes.

(13) Turn right and continue to the junction with the D926.

(14) Cross it with the usual precautions and take the wide path opposite that leads to Garricgros. Here, you will find the signposts for the northern variant of the inter-municipal trail. On the left, you will see the pretty village of Parisot. Follow this path and pass the entrance to the Tarignou property. From here, the path becomes difficult and muddy. Continue straight ahead at each intersection until you reach a crossroads near the Salayrac buildings, which can be seen on the hill on the left.

(15) Turn right and climb up to Félines. The path joins a small road. Now leave the inter-communal trail markings, turn left and descend to the D84.

(16) Turn right onto this departmental road and follow it to the D926.

(17) Turn left and walk along the edge of this busy road to reach the entrance to Caylus, where the pavements are a welcome sight.

(18) At the crossroads, turn right and walk up a gentle slope to reach the Caylus car park (S/E).

Notes

There is no water on the route, so bring enough with you.
Picnic tables at the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Grâces.

This hike is very pleasant in summer as most of the route is under oak trees. However, winter is also a good time to hike as the views are not obscured by vegetation.

The section between Tarignou and the point (15) can be very muddy depending on the season and weather conditions, and there are no shortcuts.

Worth a visit

Visit the village of Caylus, particularly its square and market hall, surrounded by some beautiful residences.

The site of Notre-Dame de Livron. A beautiful sanctuary and a pleasant place for a picnic. Very refreshing in summer.

The Chapel of Notre-Dame des Grâces and its site.

The small village of Lacapelle-Livron and the Commandery of the Knights Templar, dating from the 11th and 13th centuries, with its fortified tower.

The petrifying fountain of La Bonnette. (off the route)

A long trail of over 24 kilometres with very little tarmac in the first two thirds of the route. The scenery is pleasant and the paths are well maintained. The end of the route on tarmac is disappointing. Four kilometres on tarmac in hot weather is tough going. What a shame!

The first part of this route is interesting for its heritage, but it ends after the village of Félines with a 4-kilometre stretch of tarmac to return to Caylus!!! What a shame.

For history buffs, it is worth spending some time exploring the 11th-century Templar commandery and the 13th-century Romanesque church (in the village of Lacapelle Livron).

A very beautiful hike in spring, with lots of flowers. The description is very good and I recommend this route, which is rich in both views and architectural heritage. After Félines, the route takes the road to Caylus, but you quickly forget the tarmac once you reach the medieval town.

It's a shame to see an open-air rubbish tip in the countryside on the A84 before arriving in Caylus.

Superb hike, beautiful site to discover, signage a little sparse in places, but definitely worth doing.

We modified the hike and extended it first to Loze, then at the end we didn't take the D84 road but a small uphill path to the cabins and a quieter little road to Caylus. The only downside was that the elevation gain was almost 800 m and the distance was 30 km according to GPS readings. A very beautiful hike, especially for three-quarters of the route. I recommend this hike.

The hiking guide mentions that the end of the route is on a long stretch of road, which is unfortunately unavoidable. So, we decided to do the hike in reverse, in the opposite direction to the original guide. You have to be a bit careful because you have to rely solely on map reading. We had carefully mapped out our route on the relevant IGN maps beforehand and, of course, we had these maps with us with the route marked on them. It's a superb hike with magnificent views. The pretty little hamlets we pass through, the small chapels (which are open to visitors) and, the icing on the cake, the 13th-century Templar Commandery also add to the interest. In short, a route I highly recommend!

A very pleasant, shaded route that can be enjoyed in sunny weather, with numerous viewpoints. The only downside is that the last section after Féline is on a tarmac road. Allow about an hour.
