Castellu di Baricci (Foce Bilzese)

A short hike through undergrowth, meadows and scrubland leads to the remains of Castellu di Baricci (beautiful ruins), whose original construction dates back to the 13th century. From the summit (519m) of this rocky outcrop, hikers can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the Ortolu valley as far as Roccapina.

Description of the walk

This hike starts from the RD65 road linking Sartène to Foce, at a place called Chialza. You can park about 200 metres after the small house in Chialza, in the small dirt car park at the sanctuary (sign at the entrance), on the left-hand side of the road coming from Sartène.

Please note: the use of a GPS is strongly recommended to avoid getting lost in the scrubland and to follow the correct path through the meadow.

(S/E) To start the walk, head back towards Sartène on the RD65 (watch out for cars) for about 150 metres. Before the right-hand bend, leave the RD65 on the left to take the path through a gap between the rocks. Then continue through the undergrowth to some low scrub.
Take the track that crosses low scrub to a large open area. Follow the track downhill to the right to a hedge of brambles.

(1) Cross the hedge through the existing opening and continue along the clearly visible track that heads south through the undergrowth.

(2) At the ruined house, go through the opening in the boundary wall to continue opposite, leaving the ruin on your right.

(3) From this point, the slope becomes steep to reach the summit, with some sections requiring the use of your hands.

(4) To reach the top of the rocky outcrop, go through the gate to the ruins and take the path going up just opposite the opening. The final part of the climb is very steep.
Please note: the summit area is only accessible with caution and for experienced walkers, given the environment and the configuration of the rocky summit. For those who may be prone to vertigo, the summit has a vertiginous cliff face below.

The return to the starting point is via exactly the same route in reverse to reach the RD65 (S/E).

A really lovely walk, and the finish is well worth the trip. We missed the junction, despite our best efforts, but after checking, we realised our mistake! The start is almost impossible to spot. We built a small cairn about 400 metres from the start, on the right.
Very pleasant, though the end is a bit tricky with young children or for those who aren’t comfortable in this sort of terrain, over rocky outcrops where you need to use your hands. But there’s a stunning view at the top. Thanks to the person who organised this walk. At the moment, in April, it’s a festival of colourful flowers.

It was difficult to find the start, even with a satnav. We stopped just above point 3 as it was too risky for us.

A very beautiful hike with superb views of the Ortolo Valley.
The trail is sometimes difficult to follow, so you need to be careful, and the arrival at Casteddu is quite steep.
But the view from the top is a real reward.

Thank you for this lovely route, we loved it.
We followed the GPS track closely, it was perfect.
The forest is magical, but you'll need good shoes and to use your hands to reach the summit at the end.

GPX essential. A magical walk: good path through beautiful forest, meadow with asphodels, birdsong, rocky outcrops, 1 Hermann's tortoise... As I suffer from vertigo, it was impossible for me to climb to the top of the castellu as it was too technical. But no matter, the rest was a pleasure.

A superb hike, but difficult to find! Coming from Sartène, just after the sign for "Foce" (Chialza is not indicated), there is an isolated house on the left. The start of the hike is opposite, on a fairly wide path, and you can park in front of it. Follow the path and leave it when it turns left; then continue straight ahead across the plain (you will see old abandoned tyres and quite a few thistles). The path is then quite clearly marked, climbing and descending quite a bit, and the forest is magical!

We did this walk as a family with our 8-year-old son. He managed it very well. I was more worried about him on the way up and down the summit, but everything went well. We had a splendid view from the ruins! I recommend it. Make sure you wear good shoes with good grip, though.

After getting a little lost in the scrubland, we reached the top of the rocky outcrop (the last difficult climb) and were rewarded with a magnificent view and beautiful ruins.
In order to take the right direction when leaving the path for the scrubland, there is a landmark missing (cairn?), but luckily I had an app on my phone in addition to the map, because we had gone too far.
We parked in the stadium car park a little further away.
This is a very quiet route, far from the crowds on the coast, and to top it all off, we came across a Hermann's tortoise.

Hello,

In the middle of the scrubland

In the middle of the scrubland and off-piste, you must either:

Know how to navigate using a map and compass

Know how to use the Visorando GPS app or a GPS device.

See you soon!

It's hard to say whether the castellu is worth the walk, as we couldn't find the right path and had to give up after an hour.
In the middle of the scrubland, signposting is essential and the directions are too brief.

A short, very accessible hike with magnificent views as a reward. Watch out for thistles at the start of the route.

Great walk, allow more time than stated on the website, or perhaps it was because we did this hike when the scrubland was green, making it harder to find landmarks... steep slopes... lots of silkworms at this time of year, so bring a good walking stick to clear the way.

Provided you pay attention, this route is easy to follow, even without GPS. Pay attention to the cairns when necessary.
However, the place called Chialza is not (any longer?) signposted. Instead, use the religious pilgrimage site as a landmark and parking spot, just after the sign indicating the entrance to Foce, on the left when coming from Sartène by road.
