Countryside and marshland around Ambon

Nestled at the head of the Rivière de Pénerf, the village of Ambon sits on the first rise above the marshes. This route allows you to explore the local area along a path that alternates between wooded countryside and marshes. Given the condition of the paths at the time of our visit (May), it seems best to tackle this circular route outside of wet periods.

Description of the walk

Start: Place du Requerio, in the village of Ambon.

(S/E) Leave the village via Route de Lozach, passing the École primaire de l’Avocette and the town hall, which is set back slightly on the right. Cross the first stretch of marshland then turn right towards Le Loc.

(1) Just before the farm marking the end of the road, turn left onto the path that winds its way under the trees. This path is rarely used, so you may need to clear a way through the tall grass. Pass by a beautiful farmhouse, which you leave on your left, before continuing under the canopy of trees until you emerge in the hamlet of La Nouitte.

(2) At the end of the path, continue straight on, following the road that runs past the Grand Born farms, until you reach the Petit Born crossroads.

(3) At the crossroads, turn right and follow the Route de Lozach for about 200 m, then turn onto the path leading off to the left. Follow this until you reach a road. At the crossroads, turn left and follow this road past the Lande du Scloff.

(4) Continue straight on for about 500 m, then turn right before the first bend. You will then enter a long, wooded path, the lowest point of which is near the head of the marsh.

(5) Continue along this path until you reach the Route de Billion, then head down to the left until you reach the village. Cross the village to the crossroads.

(6) Cross the D20 with care, and continue along the path opposite. You will reach the marsh again; cross it for a few dozen metres, then continue until you reach the old railway line.

(7) This structure still dominates the landscape as it runs straight through it. The rails have given way to a sandy track used by both walkers and cyclists, who must share the route. Heading eastwards, you’ll reach the village of Le Brouel and its beautiful chapel, which is located about a hundred metres to the left of the path.

(8) On your return from the chapel, continue to the village entrance and take the path on the left which leads back to the greenway. Continue along this until you reach a campsite, then the entrance to the Prinhuel housing estate.

(9) Then leave the old railway line, taking a small path on the left that leads to the foot of Ambon Church.

(10) Take the opportunity to visit the monument, whose origins date back to the 4th or 5th century, then walk round the building to reach Rue des Jardins and Rue des Paludiers, which allow you to cross the village without using the main street. At the junction with Route de Damgan, continue straight on along Chemin du Priolet, and turn left into the small passageway that takes you back to Place de Requerio via the gardens (S/E).

Notes

The small village of Ambon has essential shops and services.

Between points (6) and (7), the route crosses a section of marshland that may be flooded. Between points (1) and (2), the path may also have some very wet sections, as it lies lower than the surrounding land.
