Cambo via Haurtzain

A magnificent e-MTB outing with exceptional views of the Basque mountains and the ocean. There are a few difficulties, but it's well worth the effort.

Description of the route

Departure: Chemin de Macaye in Basseboure. Park next to the bus stop, on the house side so as not to cause any obstruction.

(S/E) Take the road (dead end) that climbs steeply and, after a few very tight hairpin bends, continue along the path.

(1) At the three-way junction, keep right and continue straight ahead until you reach a road.

(2) Continue to the right, ignoring a small road on the right further on, and continue to a crossroads at the Macaye pastoral area.

(3) Turn left onto the Iramaldako Bidea path, then turn left onto a dirt track (elevation 342) and follow it, ignoring the paths on the left and right.

(4) At the bottom of the descent, take the path that branches off to the right and continue straight ahead for a long time, ignoring the paths on the left and right, until you reach a four-way crossroads.

(5) Turn left, then a little further on, turn left again and continue along this wide path until you reach a hunters' hut.

(6) Take the path opposite and 50 m further on, do not go down, but turn left (with the start of the Ursuya route on your right).

(7) At the three-way junction, continue slightly to the left on the path, which is not very visible as it runs through grass for a while. Ignore the paths that branch off to the left and right and take the path on the far right further down.

(8) At the hamlet, take the road on the left and continue past a farm. The road turns into a path; continue, ignoring the paths on the left and right, until you reach the bottom of a small valley.

(9) Take the hairpin bend to the right, cross the stream and continue straight ahead on a steep climb. Build up your momentum as it is a tough climb and there are lots of stones. You will reach a fork next to a house.

(10) Continue almost straight ahead on the path, ignoring the one on the right, to reach a road.

(11) Follow it to the left and continue to the next crossroads, which you already passed on the way there.

(2) Take a sharp left turn, then immediately right, and follow the path in the opposite direction to the one you took on the way there until you reach Chemin de Macaye (S/E).

Notes

No drinking water, a small waterfall halfway, a few flocks of sheep in the mountains.

Be careful in case of heavy rain, as some sections may be impassable, especially after (9).

At (6), you can continue to the right to go to Ursuya (be careful, it's a very steep climb).

Worth a visit

Enjoy the views as you progress along the route. On your return, take the opportunity to visit Cambo-les-Bains (spa town) and the Maison Arnaga (Edmond Rostand's residence), not forgetting the chocolate factory!
