Garralda Peak from Saint-Esteben

A small peak offering a wonderful 360° view, especially if the weather is on your side. Views over the Adour plain and all the peaks to the south: Ursuya, La Rhune, Mondarin, Artzamendi, Iparla, Baigura... and the entire Pyrenean range to the south-east.

Description of the route

Near Aintzia Farm, at the junction leading to Salaberri Farm, the verge offers space for a few cars to park without any problem.

(S/E) Pass the Aintzia farm on the left along the tarmac road, then turn right onto this road and follow it straight on for 900 m north/north-west to the entrance of a small wood.

(1) Leave the road to the left and take the path leading uphill at a 90° angle. Follow this path westwards; it soon turns into a track. Pass close to some huts whilst continuing in the same direction.
On this path, after about 1.6 km, you’ll reach a very dilapidated stone wall at the junction with a path leading off to the left.

(2) Follow this path; from this point, the gradient becomes much steeper. 500 m further up, let the path branch off to the right and continue for about 50 metres to the left.

(3) Turn right and climb up a fairly steep slope to the summit. Continue to thesecond summit.

(4) Begin the descent, still heading in the same direction towards the small pass, and join a farm track. Continue along this for about a hundred metres.

(5) At the Y-junction, turn left, follow the top of the ridge and then descend on the other side.

(6) At the bottom of the slope, leave the edge of a cultivated field and take the path that descends to the left. When you reach the farm track, turn left and, 100 m further on, turn right onto a path that leads, a little further down, back onto the track (shortcut). Turn right and follow this track to Ameztoia farm.

(7) Do not enter the farm; instead, take a barely visible path on the left. Continue by making a wide circular loop to the right, then, just after the right-angled bend, look for the start of a path on the left.

(8) Follow this path, which is fairly clear but narrows very quickly with dense vegetation. Once you reach the road, continue straight on and follow it until you reach the Aintzia farm (S/E).

Just before point 2, there is also a dilapidated building with a very steep path to the left. You need to turn right, going round the building, and point 2, with a ruined farmhouse, is just a little further on. At point 8, the dense vegetation has been cleared by controlled burning.

A lovely hike with stunning views of the Basque Country and vultures soaring overhead as we reached the summit. I did it with my 9- and 12-year-old daughters without any trouble.

A beautiful, idyllic walk offering 360° views of the nearby peaks (Baïgoura, Artzamendie, Ursuya, and La Rhune in the distance), and on a clear day, views of the Pic d'Annie, the Pic d'Orhy and the Ossau...
