Description of the walk

Park at the Replat Blanc car park on the D17 (altitude 321m).

(S/E) Follow the D17 north-east, towards Mussy-sur-Seine.

(1) Continue straight on along the D17. At the junction at the foot of the telecommunications masts (elevation 333), leave the road and take a dirt track on the left.

(2) At the next junction, which splits right and left, veer slightly to the right to follow the path between the dirt track and the top of the vineyards, continuing in the same direction. Continue along this path, which turns right to descend between the vineyards, then turn left. Continue between the bottom of the vineyards and the forest.

(3) Turn right to cross a slight rise and enter the forest. At the fork, turn left. Pass in front of the B7 cadole. Continue in the same direction. At the junction, just before the 296-metre mark, turn left to rejoin the dirt track.

(4) Just before the three-way junction, take the small path on the right. At the junction, continue straight ahead. Pass the Cul Brûlé cadole and then cadole B17.

(5) At the B6 cadole, head down to the right. At the junction with the path, turn right, heading north-east for 800 metres.

(6) Leave the path by veering left. Follow this winding path, initially heading generally north then west. Pass cadole B23, B11, B22 and a cadole in very poor condition.

(7) Continue along the edge of the forest for 80 m, then turn left to leave the forest and walk along the field. Do not take the white track. Continue along the edge of the forest, past the vineyard. You will see the telecommunications masts.

(8) Take the tarmac road on the left, then turn right.

(9) Turn left to go down the dirt track between the vineyards. At the bottom, turn right. At the next junction (elevation 266), go straight on downhill. You’ll come out onto another track; follow it to the right and you’ll soon reach a junction (pond, pumping station).

(10) Then turn left. After about a hundred metres, turn right and head downhill between the vineyard plots. Ignore the side paths and leave the masts on your left. Shortly after passing the masts, first turn right then left and follow a vineyard plot on your right.

(1) You’ll come out onto the D17; follow it to the right until you reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Park in the car park on the D17, east of Les Riceys.

As the markings are unreliable, it is strongly recommended that you use the app to find your way.

Fallen trees, overgrown vegetation and forestry machinery frequently obscure the narrow path as it winds its way from one cadole to the next. It is sometimes difficult to find your way along this route, which is occasionally marked in yellow or blue, with very discreet or even inaccurate signposting.
Between points 4 and 5, you may even need to ignore the yellow markings at times.

Worth a visit

Thank you for your valid comments. I have corrected the error after point 9.
As the signposting isn’t reliable, you really need to use the app to find your way around.

I have already walked these paths, which are dotted with well-restored cadoles, but the route has become difficult due to numerous fallen trees and the creation of a motocross route that cuts across the paths... however, if you persevere, you can still find your way... I agree with Dionisi Yves’s comment from August 2023, who calls for a clearer description of the signposting; I note the difficulties, particularly between points 4 and 5 at a place called Cul Brûlé la Grignotte; on the yellow signposting there are crosses that should be ignored, and a section that is once again marked in yellow.
The start of the trail at point 4 towards the Cul Brulé area also deserves the hiker’s full attention.
Well before that, between points 3 and 4, Yves’s comment about the barrier that would prevent crossing (perhaps for motorbikes or bicycles) can be ignored, as once you’ve crossed it, you immediately come across a well-marked PR path.
Of course, at point 9 at the foot of the vineyards, you must turn right.
Given the route research and ‘mistakes’, the estimated time of 3 hours 10 minutes seems about right to me.
It seems to me difficult to open this type of route to families with little hiking experience, at the risk of bad publicity for Viso Rando and for the commune of Les Riceys, which is seeking to promote its area.
I will do this route again with a small group of experienced hikers.

The description is too brief. Given the lack of signposting and the difficulty in finding landmarks, it would be helpful to indicate the distances to be covered more frequently, particularly when changing direction. There is no point in giving elevations, given the GPS’s margin of error.
Between points 3 and 4, the path is blocked by a fence. We went straight to point 4
Between points 3 and 7, we were somewhat groping in the dark. It was no longer clear whether to follow the blue or yellow markings. On three occasions we had to ignore a yellow cross, which the description does not mention.
At point 9, the instructions say to turn left at the bottom of the vineyards. This is a mistake: you must turn right, as confirmed by the route on the map.
In short, the route description needs revising.

A wonderful walk through vineyards and past the cadoles. Finding the cadoles in the forest has become a bit of a game – I highly recommend it

A lovely walk – it’s a shame we didn’t make it all the way to the end because there was a hunt going on in the woods
but we’ll do it again as there were some lovely cadoles
Thanks to whoever mapped it out

A lovely route through beautiful forests, returning via the vineyards.
The cadoles are stunning structures that make this walk well worth it.
However, make sure you bring a map, as some fir trees have been felled and the paths are missing in one spot. With the IGN map and the VISORANDO app, there’s no problem. It really is a lovely walk.
