Start the walk on Rue Jules Valles between Rue Raspail and Avenue Victor Hugo. For access to the walk and parking, see the Practical Information section.
(S/E) From Rue Jules Valles, take Avenue Victor Hugo on the right and walk to the Canal de la Peyrade bridge, cross it and turn left onto Quai Rhin et Danube. Continue to the first street on the right, Rue de Tunis.
(1) Stroll along Rue de Tunis, admiring the street art frescoes, and continue on Rue Pierre Sémard. Turn right onto Rue Lazare Carnot and walk a few metres to reach Quai d'Alger. Walk until you reach Rue de la Savonnerie on the right and follow it to Pont de la Savonnerie, which marks the boundary of the Royal district.
(2) Cross the Pont de la Savonnerie and turn left to walk along the harbour, Quai Maximin Licciardi and then Quai de la Consigne. At the roundabout, the Môle Saint-Louis begins on the left, which you can walk along to the Phare Saint-Louis lighthouse; on the left, enjoy a bird's eye view of the old harbour.
(3) Turn around on the other side of the Môle Saint-Louis for a view of the sea with trawlers passing by and the Théâtre de la Mer overlooking. Then return to the roundabout, go around it on the left to take the beginning of the Jean-Baptiste Marty promenade until you reach a staircase that goes up on the left (before the arcades).
Climb the stairs to reach Rue Caron. Stay on Rue Caron until you reach the stairs on the left that lead up to Place de l'Hospitalet. Cross the square and admire the artists painting frescoes on the wall. At the end, turn right and then right again to reach Rue Villaret-Joyeuse, which passes above the square, and head towards the Saint-Louis Deanery Church. From the square to the church, enjoy a panoramic view of the port of Sète.
(4) Climb the steps to the church forecourt, then descend Rue Pascal. Walk down the street to Rue Garenne, turn left and begin the ascent. Then turn right into Rue de Villefranche. Just before the school/college, turn left onto Chemin du Mas Rousson and climb to No. 287. At this point, there is a staircase on the left. Chemin du Mas Rousson continues up this staircase, which you should take until you reach Chemin de Saint-Clair 381 steps further on. Turn right onto Chemin de Saint-Clair and continue to the Mont Saint-Clair car park. Turn right towards the panoramic viewpoint.
(5) Stop at Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette to see the original paintings inside the chapel. Then head towards the cross for a panoramic view of the Étang de Thau and Sète. The view is beautiful, but remember to continue on your way and head back down. To do so, at the start of Chemin des Pèlerins, take the stairs on Chemin de Biscan. Not immediately to the right; it joins Rue de Belfort, which you must go down, then Rue Louis Ramond and Rue Paul Valéry in succession until you reach Place de la Pieuvre (or Place du Pouffre, Place du Poulpe or even Place Léon Blum, if not Place de la Mairie).
(6) From the square, turn left onto the pedestrian street (Rue Gambetta then Rue du 8 Mai 1945) until you reach Rue Gabriel Péri. Turn right onto this street and continue until you reach Quai Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny.
(7) Walk up Quai Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny with the canal on your right, then continue along Quai de Bosc. At the police station, cross the canal via Pont de la Bordigue and continue straight ahead to reach the starting point via Rue Jules Valles and its intersection with Avenue Victor Hugo (S/E).
