Boucles des crêtes et vallon du Berthier

A double circular route in the hills above Tournon. Beautiful views of the Doux and Duzon gorges. 80% of the route is on trails and paths. The few tarmac sections are very quiet.

N.B. Please read the practical information carefully before setting off on the route.

Description of the walk

Park at the corner of Route de Lamastre and Chemin du Berthier.

(S/E) Take Chemin du Berthier, heading south. After about 300 metres, the road turns right.

(1) Shortly after the bend, take the path on the left which crosses a small bridge over the Ruisseau du Berthier. Continue to a ruined house and turn right onto a wider path.

(2) At the intersection, follow the tarmac road on the left, Chemin des Trousses.

(3) At the end of the street, turn right onto Chemin de Chabot. Continue until you reach the intersection with a path on the right.

(4) Take this path, which climbs and leads you to a place called Plot.

(5) You will come to a track; follow it to the right (marked yellow and white). After about 300 m, leave the track and take a path that descends to the right. Cross a stream and continue west, then south-southwest.

(6) Cross the Ruisseau du Berthier and climb up the other side. At a fork, keep to the right (marked yellow and white). Cross a road and take the path opposite that descends north-northwest. You will soon reach the GR® 420 at a place called Ferrand.

(7) Follow the GR®420 (red and white markings) to the left, heading south-west. Pass under a high-voltage power line, come out onto a road and follow it to the left for about 50 metres.

(8) Just after the houses, climb a rock on the left to reach an unmarked path that rises above the road. The clearing carried out in December 2021 makes it easy to follow the path as it climbs to reach a field, which you should follow on the left-hand side. Then continue climbing in a southerly direction.

(9) Reach a road and follow it to the right. Ignore a road on the left and cross the hamlet of Le Rey. Continue along a track to a place called Le Bec.

(10) Then turn right (north) to follow the GR®420. Descend and, after several hairpin bends, you will reach a T-junction.

(11) Then turn right. Keep heading north-northwest until you reach La Grange de Vaure. Ignore a path coming from the right at the entrance to the hamlet.

(12) In the hamlet, take the next path on the right. Join a tarmac road and follow it to the right until you reach Mouret.

(8) Continue along the road and, after about 50 metres, turn right onto the GR®420 towards Ferrand (in the opposite direction to the outward journey).

(7) Continue straight ahead on the path (ignore the outward route on the right). You will soon reach a road and follow it to the left (north), still with the GR®®. After 300 m, you will reach a cross.

(13) Just after the cross, turn right (east) onto an unmarked path that is not shown on the map. Climb up to reach a wider path. Follow this yellow and white marked path to the left. Descend to reach the Chemin du Berthier.

(1) Follow the path to the left until you reach Route de Lamastre (S/E).

Notes

There are several parking options at the start.

Given the lack of signposting on part of the route, it is strongly recommended that you use GPS in addition to the IGN map.

Difficulties, according to the FFR rating guide
- Effort: 3 Moderate (IBP67)
- Technical difficulty: 4 Difficult (one section where you need to use your hands)
- Risk: 3 (low)
This route is suitable for experienced walkers in good physical condition.

Please note: at (8), access to the trail requires using your hands to climb over a rocky section approximately 1.5 metres long. There are no significant difficulties, but particular caution is advised for the first hundred metres as the path was damaged during the storms in November 2019.

Worth a visit

- The Ardèche tourist train station and train. The Mastrou. Rail bike.
- Views of the Duzon viaduct.
- The Cuves du Duzon.
- The city of chocolate.

Thank you to the person who posted this route on the website. However, there was a change after only 1 km in Chalieux, where the path is blocked by signs indicating a private road among small houses. We turned left to avoid crossing the chain supporting this sign, which is a small path that passes near the houses. We then rejoined the planned trail! Was there too much traffic from mountain bikers and motorcyclists? This little-used path is starting to be overgrown with brambles. The rest of the route is very nice, and the rock where you have to use your hands and push with your bum adds to the atmosphere of this hike. We went to see the Duzon vats, which are worth a detour.

Hello,
Thank you for your comment.
To clarify, it is the private path (not shown on the map) leading down to the Duzon tanks that is not maintained. The route as described is maintained.

We did this hike, which was very beautiful. We pushed on to the Duzon tanks, but if you want to go there, don't take the GR straight after point 9, but at point 10. Be careful, though, as the path is not properly cleared.

A pleasant hike, especially when it's hot, as the route is mostly shaded.
There are also several beautiful viewpoints.

We did this route on a Sunday in December and didn't see anyone else. We added a "detour" to see the Cuves du Duzon (splendid).
For point 7, to find the path on the left with the rock, look for a house with a metal bird statue at the gate (see photos). The rock is very easy to cross (may be slippery if icy).

A lovely hike in beautiful weather, despite a bit of a gusty wind.
The route is varied with beautiful panoramic views and long stretches through the woods.
The description is generally reliable, but at a place called "le bec" it is easy to get confused: more precise directions would be welcome.

A beautiful route enjoyed in fine weather. How wonderful it is to rediscover the flora as it awakens in spring...
The route description is very reliable.
One of the interesting things about this hike is that it takes you along small paths that are probably not used very often.
We didn't meet many people, even though we did this hike on a Sunday.

A beautiful hike completed without any problems using a GPS. Don't miss the start of circular 2, which is not easy to see (climbing the rock is not difficult), and don't hesitate to continue through the fallen trees for about a hundred metres. Beautiful views of the Alps and the Duzon Valley. Sheltered from the wind in the wooded areas and slightly exposed on the ridges. Only one person encountered during the day. The time estimate is generous. Read the directions carefully, as they are perfect.

Beautiful wooded hike with magnificent views. The only downside is the rock, which is difficult to climb if you're not very tall, and the path is cluttered with trees, making it a little complicated. Thank you for this beautiful route.
