Circular route on the heights of St-Laurent-des-Arbres, amongst vineyards and heath

Set off easily to explore nature from the centre of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres.

The view of Mont Ventoux will accompany you throughout this hike, which presents no technical difficulty but will still require a pair of trainers and the ability to walk 13 km. Although there are several shaded sections, bring a hat and 1 litre of water per person if the temperature exceeds 25°C.

The route will surprise you with the diversity of its landscapes and vegetation. After a stroll through the heath, the path continues through Lirac, then climbs through the vineyards before descending through a pine forest with sandy ground.

Description of the walk

Park in the free car park at the Pierre Garcia Socio-Cultural Centre, Place Vigan Braque.

(S/E) Take Rue Marcel Pagnol, which leaves the village centre heading west, passing in front of the school.

(1) At the junction, take Chemin de la Montagnette on the left, which continues along a tarmac path with a gentle, steady climb. Carry straight on, ignoring the left-hand turnings leading towards the vineyards. The road gives way to a stony path; behind you, the Mont Ventoux comes into view.

(2) At the La Montagnette hiking sign, note a fire risk sign providing information on the route’s accessibility. Continue to a barrier blocking access to motor vehicles.

(3) Carry on straight ahead after the barrier, along a wide, even path. Please note that this section has little shade.

Alternative route: you can take the track on the left to shorten the walk and arrive directly at the point (7), but you will miss the wild heath section.

(4) As the path continues straight ahead towards Saint-Victor-la-Coste, turn left before the DFCI (forest fire defence) sign. On a gentle climb, the path becomes rockier but remains largely passable.

(5) At the junction, take a narrow path that descends to the left, offering a glimpse of Mont Ventoux.

(6) At the bottom of the slope, turn left at the junction before the path climbs again, then continue downwards, staying on the main track and keeping to the left. Join the DFCI track.

(7) Follow it to the right andcontinue to the viewpoint overlooking Mont Ventoux and the Château de Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres.

(8) Continue along the track to the DFCI Y12 sign.

(9) Leave the track by turning left and head towards another gate. Continue straight on past the gate, climbing whilst keeping the horse paddock on your left.

(10) At the Les Sallet sign, follow Rue du Sallet to the right to enter Lirac.

(11) Turn left onto Rue de l'Aspic andcross the village to the church.

(12) Turn right onto Place de la Mairie. Follow the signs for Domaine Beaumont – Chemin de la Filature. Pass the entrance to the estate on your right and leave the road to take a short, shaded path for a few metres.

(13) Turn right onto Chemin du Moulin, then cross the bridge over the Nizon and continue to the next junction.

(14) Turn right onto Chemin de Saint-Geniez, then take a hairpin bend that climbs to the left onto Chemin de la Plane. You will then find yourself amidst the vineyards with another breathtaking view of Mont Ventoux. Continue straight ahead up the hill.

(15) Turn left at the junction andcontinue right onto Chemin de l'Yeuseraie / DFCI Y87, heading downhill.

(16) Turn left onto Chemin du Col du Devez. Go straight past the Pins de Mireille signpost towards Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres . To the left of the path is a car park and a picnic area. At the roundabout, continue straight on along Chemin des Sables.

(17) Pass Le Nizon then continue along Chemin du Moulin Neuf, straight on to the starting point (S/E).

You can cross Marcel Chevalier Square, which has public toilets with a drinking fountain at its northern exit opposite the town hall.
