Short walk around the Mourre de la Cabane

This is a short, pleasant and fairly shaded walk. You will, however, need to take a few small paths and descend a few metres via a ‘short climb down’. A view of the Rhône Valley will be visible along the way on clear days.

Description of the walk

Coming from Tavel, park in the car park at the entrance to the village of Lirac on the right. This is located next to the wash house.

(S/E) Cross the Route de Tavel, head straight on to the three-way junction and turn right to follow the Chemin des Vayorces. Continue along this path, which follows the valley of the same name and goes round the Mourre de la Cabane on the right.

(1) Take the path on the left and follow the track as it climbs. Once at the top, turn left.

(2) Take a path that descends via a short climb down. Continue to follow the path. At the fork, take the left-hand path and at the next fork, descend onto the path also on the left.

(3) Turn onto the path on the right which joins another path marked in yellow (PR®®).

(4) Go straight on, following thisPR®®, and carry on until you reach the road. Cross over to reach the car park (S/E).

A pleasant short hike, the two climbing sections are not vertiginous and can be crossed with ease.
The path between points 1 and 2 is not clear, so wear trousers to avoid scratches.
At the top, I was glad I had the app to help me choose at the intersections because the trail is not marked, except at the very end.

A lovely route, but difficult to follow as there aren’t many landmarks. After point 1, the walk turns into a climb with quite a lot of undergrowth that scratches your calves. Long trousers are recommended.
Once at the top of the hill, it’s not easy to find your way back down to the Lirac. Once you’ve found the path, the route is very pleasant 😊
In summary, a lovely circular route to do in trousers. Keep an eye on the climbing section if you have young children.

Hello,
There are absolutely no landmarks in the first part of the route: point no. 1 is impossible to find as there are no distinctive features in the landscape (tree, rock).
A lovely shaded path until it joins the main access road.
Landmarks really need to be put in place to avoid getting lost, as we did today.
At the starting point, the Lirac wash house is a magnificent site and very well maintained.
Kind regards.

A short nature walk, undertaken in March 2022. At the time, I had to use the Visorando app (GPS) to find the steep ‘descalade’ section (point 2) on the rocky heights. This year I altered the route (2 hours) by continuing along the path in the valley to rejoin the track to the south-west and climb up to the Vaucrozes cross. Returning to the track to the north-east, I then found the path again further on (between points 2 and 3) via a stony section marked by a cairn. A real treat for my (sporty) dogs. Thank you very much for sharing this. One last thing: read the practical information carefully.

Thank you for your comment. It’s true that there are countless false trails in the heath. The number of waypoints is limited in Visorando, so it’s not easy to mark all the changes of direction on the map. The ‘climbing’ was mentioned in the description. The appeal of this walk is that it takes you along little-used paths.

A quiet little Sunday morning stroll that turned into an expedition involving a bit of scrambling and navigating by sight
Finding our way wasn’t easy because there are so many paths in the heath. It was also our first time using the app, and perhaps we weren’t quite awake yet!
In any case, it’s very peaceful, very beautiful and the walk is pleasant.
As we must have gone wrong, I won’t judge the difficulty, but with a 5-year-old I’d say it’s more ‘moderate’ than ‘easy’.
