Loop via Kérity, the Pointe de Penmarch and the old Birinik train line

From the market town of Penmarch, this route leads to the seafront, past the Port de Kérity, the Pointe de Penmarch with its imposing Eckmül lighthouse, and the Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Joie right on the seafront. The return journey takes you along the old railway line between Pont-l'Abbé and Saint-Guénolé.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Penmarch town hall.

No signposting

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the pedestrian crossing opposite the imposing Sainte-Nonna church, turn left and, at the crossroads, follow the main street, Rue François Merrien, until you reach the first street on the left.

(1) Fork into Rue de la Gare, follow it straight ahead, cross a road and continue straight ahead. Continue along Rue de l'École de Voile until you come to a fork in the road at the entrance to a marshy area.

(2) Turn right towards the water treatment plant, then pass between fishponds on your right and a campsite on your left to reach the coastal path.

GR®34 marked White and Red

(3) Turn right onto the coastal path. From here, you can make out the 60 m high Eckmül lighthouse. On the seaward side, look out for the Archipel des Étocs, a rocky group of islands home to a colony of seals, and two old seaweed kilns on the dune. Walk along the Marais du Ster and its ponds until you reach the long jetty at the port of Kérity (in calm weather, you can make a round trip: 900 m).

(4) Walk along the harbour quay and look out for an old 17th-century guardhouse on the right, now the harbour office. Go past a roundabout and continue straight on along Rue de la Corniche until you see an old windmill on the right.

(5) Fork left onto the coastal path, pass by a statue (To the brave sailors, our thoughts forever), find a street and follow it to reach the Pointe de Penmarch. Go past the old lifeboat shelter, Papa Poydenot (exhibition), around the Eckmül lighthouse, the old lighthouse and Chapelle Saint-Pierre (exhibitions in summer).

(6) Continue along the coast and you will soon come across the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Joie and its Calvary.

(7) Continue along the coast as far as the entrance to the port area of Saint-Guénolé.

(8) Opposite a primary school, turn right, cross the Rue de la Joie (D80) at the pedestrian crossing and, opposite, take a passage leading to the former Pont-l'Abbé - Saint-Guénolé railway line, which has been converted into a cycle path.

(9) Turn right onto this track, which begins a long straight stretch between two marshy areas, cross a footbridge and come to a crossroads where two PR® meet.

Yellow PR® markings (very present).

(10) Continue along the old railway line running north-east. First follow Bannell Gar Kérity, then Rue Ster Vihan where you pass by a stone fountain.

(11) Cross the D785 at the pedestrian crossing, continue along the Venelle des Enclos Fleuris and pass the first school.

(12) Bend left, cross the vast esplanade between the two schools and turn right into Rue François Merrien.

(13) Turn left to go alongside the cemetery, cross a small square, then take the one-way street opposite, Rue de l'Église, and enter the enclosure. Take the time to walk around the church to discover all the boat sculptures carved in stone. If the church is open, don't miss the visit. On the right, look out for the imposing war memorial: a bigoudène (widow) in a hooded coat stands next to a kersantite obelisk.
Carefully cross Rue Edmond Michelet to the car park opposite (S/E).

In fine weather, cycling along the coast is absolutely lovely; the route is flat and the return journey a bit monotonous, but it’s a ride well worth doing.
