Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, head towards the village of Hérisson. In the centre of the village, in front of the town hall, head towards Cerilly. The car park is located 50 metres to the right (access to the castle).

(S/E) From the car park, turn right into Rue du Cacheloup. Walk a few dozen metres and then turn right onto Chemin de Piraveau. In the left-hand bend, take the path on the right that passes between the two buildings and continue to Rue de Gateuil. Then turn left towards the north-east and walk to the end of this street.

(1) Continue along the country lane on the ridge to Croix de l'Ours. Be warned, it's a steep climb, but well worth the effort! At the top of the ridge, enjoy the breathtaking view over the Aumance valley, the village and the castle.

(2) At Croix de l'Ours, take the path on the right that runs along the ridge. Walk to the next crossroads and turn right, heading south-east on the tarmac road for about 1 km to reach Moulin des Cassons (private property).

(3) At the gate, take the path on the left that leads into the undergrowth. Cross the first stream and continue to the footbridge that allows you to cross another stream. Follow this path uphill to a place called La Côte du Lac.

(4) At the farm buildings (private property), turn left and follow the path for about 400 m. At the intersection, turn right and continue on the tarmac road that passes near Frémagnet.

(5) At the junction with Chemin de La Bourse, continue left, heading north-east, then cross the farms of Vervatière and La Maugarnie. At La Maugarnie, walk along the edge of the Soulongis State Forest for about 300 m.

(6) Turn left onto the Maugarnie forest track to reach Rond de la Maugarnie (five paths), in the heart of the Soulongis National Forest. Turn left towards the south-west onto the D 251 and follow the tarmac road for about 1.5 km.

(7) Before reaching the Manoir de Montchenin (private property), turn right onto the bocage path that goes around the manor house on the left and then the farm buildings. Continue straight ahead towards the west, crossing the Ruisseau des Guêtres stream (be careful as the water level may vary depending on the season and rainfall). Continue uphill for 1 km towards La Quécoule.

(8) Pass the Auberge de La Quécoule farm, then at the intersection, turn left onto the tarmac road and immediately right onto the country lane that joins the D 3 after 1.1 km.

(9) Cross the D3 with caution and follow the signs for Chateloy church. At the Y-junction at La Pierrière, turn left.
At this junction, you can continue straight ahead to visit the church of Saint-Pierre de Châteloy.
Go to the end of the tarmac road and continue along the dirt track for 400 m.

(10) At the intersection, turn left and follow the path heading south, which returns to the village of Hérisson.

(11) Before reaching Maison Rouge, turn right onto the path leading downhill. Pass to the right of Notre-Dame Church, take the stairs, then turn left onto Rue Cacheloup to return to the car park 50 m away (S/E).

Pleasant circular loop, not very busy
Well signposted with lovely views
The route is very reliable
A visit to the superb painted church in Chateloy is a bonus (only open during the season from 1 May to 30 September).
I agree with what has been said about avoiding going there when it rains. Some paths are indeed very muddy (due to agricultural machinery). As for crossing streams, we had no problems as there are small "improvements" made by hikers (beams).

The route is interesting. There are beautiful views.
Many of the paths are paved, perhaps a third of them.
However, if it has been wet and rainy in the previous days, much of the route is difficult to navigate, as the paths are muddy, flooded and rutted by agricultural machinery. This is a bit of a shame.
Not suitable for children or people with mobility issues.
I will do it again in dry weather.

The route took 4 hours and 40 minutes with three short breaks, a detour to Chateloy Church and a visit to Hérisson Castle. There is quite a lot to see and you can even bring your dog along. The rivers to cross were all dry when I went. There are quite a few tarmac paths but hardly any traffic and it's still pleasant. I recommend this hike, it does you good!

This route is signposted and it would be easier to start from the signposted starting point on the Quais de l'Aumance (see information sheet on rando.allier-tourisme.com). One criticism of this route is that almost a third of it is on tarmac. Otherwise, there are beautiful views of Hérisson and the Val d'Aumance. The Saint Pierre de Chateloy church is worth a visit. It is open all summer.

A beautiful hike offering stunning scenery, very pleasant on this lovely sunny day. The only issue, if you can call it that, was crossing the streams, which was a bit risky given the high water flow. But that was part of the challenge.
