Description of the walk

On leaving Meaulne-Vitray and after taking the D312, park at the Dagouret forest car park.

(S/E) Head due south across the D312 in the opposite direction to the Roman camp. You will soon reach theGR®®303, marked in red and white. After the road forks, take the path on the right and head towards the houses of L’Abye.

(1) Take the road on the left and rejoin theGR®® at the next junction. Turn right onto it and continue on to reach the hamlet of Les Alliers.
Walk past the Château des Alliers, then at a crossroads with several directions, take the road on the left and after about a hundred metres, turn right.

(2) Take the path on the left – this is still theGR®® – continue on, cross a small stream and you will come to another crossroads.

(3) Leave theGR®® here by taking the path on the left. Continue uphill, passing the Croix du Pin on your right. Still climbing, cross the road leading to Les Liaudais and reach the junction with the road to Le Plaix.

(4) Turn right onto this road and head towards the water tower on the edge of the woods. Enter the woods by taking the path on the left. Join the D312 road.

(5) Turn left onto this road, begin the descent and leave the forest. Then walk along the edge of the forest, past the houses at Le Bouchant, and turn right onto the path to return to the car park at the Dagouret forest car park (S/E).

A lovely walk with superb views; the countryside is beautiful. Given the torrential rain over the last few days, the paths are a bit muddy.

To start with, we went to see the Tureau de Chatelus. It was well signposted, even though one sign had fallen to the ground (we propped the sign back up on a tree stump). It’s a large mound of earth, shaped like one of the oldest fortifications. Also worth a visit outside of the hike are Drevant and La Groutte to round off the theme of ancient fortifications in the area. Afterwards, we were treated to some lovely views from the heights as the sun set, given the late hour of our walk. The final stretch of the night wasn’t too difficult, thanks to the standard route description and the GPX track. There aren’t many changes of direction, and there are two types of landscape: the hills of Meaulne at the start (it feels like you’re in the mountains) and the beautiful forest afterwards. We really enjoyed this walk.
