In memory of Nicolas Rambourg

This beautiful walk will take you back to the rich industrial past of the Tronçais Forest. You will visit the forges at Morat and Tronçais, built by the Lorraine industrialist Nicolas Rambourg, and the four ponds (Saint-Bonnet, Morat, Tronçais, Saloup) that he created to power them. An industrial nod in the heart of France’s most beautiful oak forest.

Description of the walk

Start at the Rond du Chevreuil forest road junction, on the D978a.

(S/E) With your back to the ONF hut, cross the tarmac road and take the Ligne de Baignerault (signpost). Follow it straight on until the end of the track.

(1) At the end of the track, on the edge of the forest, take the track on the right. Ignore the Chemin du Bois on the left and continue along the Chemin de la Feuillée until you reach the main track, the Route Forestière de Baignerault.

(2) Turn right onto this Route Forestière de Baignerault and follow it for about 200m.

(3) Leave this track and take a narrower path slightly to the left, which leads to Rond du Haut du Parc.

(4) At Rond du Haut du Parc, head towards the pond along the track on the left, the one closest to the path you have just come along (GR®303).

(5) On reaching the pond, the path crosses the educational trail at the Étang de Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais. Take the left-hand path and follow it to the pond’s shore.

(6) At the pond’s embankment, ignore it and head left along Rue de l’Étang towards the village of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais. Walk past the care home and cross the roundabout. In front of the school, turn right onto Rue des Maures until you reach Route de Tronçais (D39) (wall mural on the house). Continue left for about 50 metres.

(7) Turn right and then right again after the bridge (Allée du Vieux Morat).

(8) At the Rond du Vieux Morat crossroads, admire the remains of the Morat forges (chimney) and continue your walk along the Étang de Morat.

(9) Continue along this lovely track (on your left: the Colbert Forest and remarkable trees), ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left until you reach the wide tarmac road (D978a) at the entrance to Tronçais.

(10) Take this road to the right, crossing the embankment of the Étang de Tronçais (behind you: the Tronçais forges). Continue along the road to the Rond de Tronçais crossroads.

(11) Take the track alongside the ONF hut until you come to another track. Turn left onto this track (Route Forestière de la Clef des Fossés).

(12) Just before the track leading to La Font des Porchers, turn right onto the clearly marked track between plots 325 and 326, leading to the Étang de Saloup. At the pond, turn left and follow the bank to the tarmac road. Take this road on the right and cross the Étang de Saloup. Follow the road, cross the D39 and continue straight ahead to the Rond des Loges crossroads.

(13) Turn onto the wide track on the left (Ligne des Loges) until you reach another wide track (Route Forestière de la Boulée). Turn right onto this track until you reach the Rond de la Font Bégault crossroads.

(14) Continue straight ahead until you reach a wide forest road (Route Forestière de La Bouteille). Follow this road to the right. Pass through the Rond de Vitray junction, then the Rond de la Croix de Vitray junction, and continue straight on for about 700m.

(15) Turn left onto the boundary line separating plots 377 and 378. Follow this line until you reach a major junction of forest tracks.

(16) At the signpost, take the first track on the right (Ligne du Haut du Parc) and return to the start at the Rond du Chevreuil junction (S/E).

A lovely walk; we cut the route short as we didn’t have time to do the whole thing.
The Morat forges are a fascinating reminder of our industrial past.

It’s a long walk, but there are no particular difficulties (4½ hours’ walking: the advertised 7 hours 15 minutes – admittedly including breaks – might put some people off!).
We started the route in St Bonnet, which means we can finish off with a swim in the pond!
There isn’t much shade in some places, so make sure you bring a hat and plenty of water if it’s hot.
An interesting glimpse of the forges.

Hello,
I completed this walk in 5 hours and 40 minutes, including a half-hour lunch break. Apart from a few people in the village, I didn’t meet anyone. Very beautiful ponds, oak forests of all ages, and an interesting industrial history.
At point 12, ‘turn right onto the clearly marked line between plots 325 and 326’ should be replaced with ‘turn right onto a path that quickly becomes a grassy track, between plots 325 and 326’.
The state-owned forest is criss-crossed by numerous paths and tracks, allowing you to adjust the length of the route as you wish, by extending it or taking the shortest route.

The duration is as advertised: approximately 7 hours, including breaks.
Can be completed in 5½ hours for keen walkers, without breaks, with refreshments taken whilst walking.
Animal sightings are random – this isn’t a zoo!
For us, three does calmly crossing a forest track, spotted again in the side paths
One fox scuttling across a meadow, didn’t even notice we were there
And plenty of very fresh tracks – does, stags, roe deer, wild boar, badgers – very interesting with a bit of knowledge (or the network)
And the ever-present song of the cuckoo, the golden oriole, and the tapping of various woodpeckers.
We met one mountain biker and a walker.
One slight downside: a bit too much tarmac for our liking, but still reasonable – probably no more than 2 km
This majestic forest is so well laid out that the routes can be adapted to suit your needs

A lovely forest trail, though best tackled on a mountain bike; however, it doesn’t take you past the magnificent oaks, so you’ll need to add the ‘Seven Oaks’ route to your route.
Perfect for seeing the facilities from the heyday of the forges.
