Circular walk between Rammersmatt and Bourbach-le-Bas, the Petit Jardin d’Éole

This short, pleasant walk through the woods and fields of the Alsatian countryside will introduce you to one of Bourbach-le-bas’s ‘technical’ curiosities: the ‘Petit Jardin d’Éole’, consisting of machines built by a local resident from recycled parts and powered by the wind.
Along the way, you’ll also come across a botanical trail, and at the start of the walk, you’ll be treated to some lovely views of the Alsatian plain.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the car park at Rammersmatt Town Hall.

(S/E) Take Rue Principale heading south-west and, just before the last building in the village, turn left onto a path; after about 100 metres, you’ll reach a fork.

(1) Ignore the path on the right (this is the return route); turn left onto the botanical trail. Follow it for about 200 m. At the Fork in the road, ignore the path leading off to the left and take the one on the right. Stay on the botanical trail and follow this well-cleared path until you reach a wood visible on the right, just after passing under a power line.

(2) Leave the main path and turn right into the forest. At the exit, turn left and follow the path down the edge of the woodland to the D35 road. Follow it to the right until you reach a path leading down to the right. Turn onto this path, following the sign indicating (among other things) Bourbach-le-bas, Church. It descends and turns sharply to the right after about 150 m.
Walk past the cemetery on your right and you’ll reach Rue de la Notten. Turn left into a narrow, sometimes slippery, downhill passage. This leads out onto Rue des Jardins. Follow it to the junction with Rue de l’École (on the right) and Rue du Laminage (on the left). At this junction you can see the “Petit Jardin d’Éole”. See Practical Information.

(3) Follow Rue de l’École to Rue de l’Église, then walk up to the church. Go round it on the left, taking a path that runs behind the houses to the east of the village, until you reach Rue de l’Ours. Turn right and head north along this street. Leave the village straight away by going up a dirt track which, after a few hundred metres, joins a path coming from the right.

(4) Continue straight ahead, heading north, following a sign indicating (among other things) “Rammersmatt, Hundsruck”. Ignore thefirst path that veers off to the left and continue to the right. The path continues northwards and reaches a path blocked by mounds of earth (at the time this walk was undertaken).

(5) Ignore this path and turn sharply right, heading east, onto a path marked with red-white-red Red Rectangles (a variant ofthe GR®5). Climb uphill, passing a path on your right, and continue following the sign for “Rammersmatt”; after about fifty metres, you’ll come out onto a wide path.

(6) Turn left and follow this path north-eastwards to return to the junction that completes the circular route.

(1) Turn left, rejoin the Main Street and then head for the Town Hall car park (S/E).

Very good description and an excellent map. We hesitated a little on leaving Bourbach, trying to find the path back towards Rammersmatt, which wasn’t shown on the signs. The only indication was ‘towards the botanical trail’.
Fortunately, some people confirmed that this was indeed the direction to Rammersmatt, which put our minds at ease.
Thank you very much for introducing us to this circular walk, which we hadn’t known about before.

Great route – I found it a bit tricky to work out how to use the map at first, but in hindsight it was brilliant
