Circular route between the Iton, the plain and the forest, starting from La Vacherie Verdun.

A lovely walk between plains and forests, with beautiful churches to admire along the way.
A very pleasant place to have lunch.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the town hall in La Vacherie Verdun.

(S/E) Turn left out of the car park, then right onto Rue des Prés, and follow the road around a bend to a crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead on this path, which enters the forest. Follow it before entering the forest again. Leave the path at a place called Le Banc de Pierre and follow the tarmac road to thefirst house in the hamlet of Les Planches.

(2) Turn left into the street and, at the intersection with a large oak tree, follow theGR®222to the left. Walk along the left bank of the Iton, then pass the castle to reach the D112 crossroads.

(3) Turn right and continue along this road until you reach the Croix du Loup crossroads. Continue straight ahead, then take the path on the right and head towards the cemetery.

(4) Cross the road and rejoin theGR®222, which winds its way over rocky terrain. At the next crossroads, stay on theGR® to reach the La Mare Hermier neighbourhood.

(5) Leave theGR® here and turn left onto Rue des Tourterelles. Turn left again onto Route du Boulay. Continue until you reach thethird crossroads, which is a four-way intersection.

(6) Take the path on the left, reach the edge of a wood, follow it to the right and then right again until you reach a wider path with a Norman farmhouse on the right.

(7) Turn left, then immediately right onto the grassy, straight path, pass close to the Mare du Hazé, then rejoin a tarmac road.

(8) Cross it and enter the Bois de Landes opposite. At the next fork, turn left onto the path leading to the Grande Vallée. Make a wide circular loop to the left. This path runs parallel to the road and joins it at a place called Les Caumettes.

(9) Take this road on the right to reach the D61 crossroads at the entrance to Hondouville.

(10) Turn right again onto this road, Rue du Général de Gaulle, pass the church and then turn left onto Rue du Lavoir. Continue left onto Rue Valois, turn right at the crossroads with Rue des Prés. Pass in front of the Jean Bart Fountain and you will come to a mini roundabout. Turn left towards La Vacherie, pass the factory, cross the Iton river and rejoin theGR®222.

(11) Turn right onto it for a few metres, then leave it and continue along the road for a few more metres. Leave the road and take the path opposite on the left. Start climbing into the woods and reach the top at the edge of the woods. Continue along the Cote de la Vacherie, then turn right onto Rue des Prés to return to the car park at La Vacherie Verdun Town Hall (S/E).

Well, for my part, I admit I came back rather disappointed. More than half of this hike is on tarmac roads, and there is a long straight stretch on grassy ground between two large fields, which is monotonous and uninteresting. Fortunately, the few passages through the forest, the churches of Amfreville and Hondouville, and especially the moment when you walk along the Iton (magical) save this hike a little, but I won't be doing it again...
As for the explanations, I quickly abandoned them in favour of the trail, as they lacked clarity and did not indicate crossroads, changes in the colour of the markings, or the types of terrain (take a tarmac road, go up the dirt track, arrive on a forest road, etc.), which is very useful when walking.
Sorry for this very mixed review, but thank you anyway to the hiker who posted this walk! I completed the hike in 5 hours.

Hello everyone, sorry for the late comment, but better late than never, especially when the comment is very positive We really enjoyed this walk, which allowed us to enjoy a variety of landscapes, from forests to plains, in the fresh May air. There are lots of nice places to stop and enjoy the local architecture. The brave among you could even consider a little detour (2 km) to the church in Canappeville. Don't hesitate to give it a go!

Great! A beautiful walk through the forest, across the plains and along the river.
Sunshine at the end of May.
Point 11 was a bit tricky and I got lost.
Took 6 hours including meal and break time (2 km more because of my wanderings...).

A pleasant hike despite the (too many for my liking) paved sections.

A very beautiful hike, between landscapes along the banks of the Iton, paths through the countryside and superb forests ablaze with autumn colours.
There are some beautiful buildings along this route, which I extended by connecting points 11 to 3, plus a few small detours. All in all, a very beautiful 25 km hike.
Thank you very much for this very interesting route.

Thank you very much for this comment.
I really enjoyed planning this hike for my friends.
I'm new to Visorando and the time was set automatically. It took me less time too.

A pleasant hike. Crossing from one side of the Iton Valley to the other is enjoyable, the paths are very passable and there is very little tarmac, which is a bonus. I think the estimated time of 6 hours and 5 minutes is optimistic, as I completed the route in 4 hours and 50 minutes.
A hike to be recommended.
