Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the Maison de la Montagne in Villar-Saint-Pancrace.

(S/E) Return to the junction with the Route des Ayes. Turn right onto it and follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®5, ignoring all turn-offs to the left. Reach the crossroads at a hairpin bend.

(1) Turn left, go through the gate and continue along the GR®. Reach a path junction in a left-hand bend.

(2) Leave theGR® here and take this path to the right. Go round a few bends to reach the hamlet of Le Lauzin. Continue to the right and you will soon come to a T-junction.

(3) Stay on the left-hand path to emerge onto the tarmac road leading to Les Ayes.

(4) Cross it and, opposite (signposted ‘Le Mélézin’), take the yellow-marked path. Continue on, climbing steadily through a larch wood, until you reach the hamlet of Le Mélézin.

(5) Here, turn left onto the dirt track and follow it. You will then reach the Ravin de l'Avalanche after a gentle descent.

(6) Continue along the road until you reach the junction with the tarmac road. Turn left here, cross the bridge over the Torrent de l’Orceyrette and you will then arrive at the hamlet of Les Ayes.

(7) Continue along this road through Les Ayes and follow the red and whiteGR® markings. After passing the climbing site, you’ll reach a fork with a new dirt track.

(8) Turn right here onto theGR®5and continue down an easy descent to return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way out to return to the Maison de la Montagne car park (S/E)

A beautiful climb through the larch forest. This hike must be even more beautiful in autumn. Don't forget to take a look at the Lauzin estate on the way.

A lovely short walk through the larch trees to a deserted hamlet, though it’s frequented by cows. Watch out for mountain bikers using part of the path on their way down.

The walk starts from the car park at the "Centre Montagne" – that is the exact name of the place and the one shown on all the signposts. The walk description mentions the Maison de la Montagne.
I only covered the route between the Centre Montagne and the hamlet of Mélezin (point 5).
Unfortunately, the path between points 4 and 5 was blocked by a large number of felled trees, due to forestry work. The skidder had completely damaged the path in places. It was difficult to follow; I regularly had to leave the path and make my way through the forest alongside it.
I hope that once the forestry work is finished, the area will be restored.

On the way back, I decided to avoid this path and returned via the track that descends from Mélezin, passing through the valley meadows and the Clot des Prés.

The route runs largely through woodland, which is a real bonus in hot weather.
As suggested in another review, we climbed up to Planpeyron and Lake Orceyrette, following the Cerveyrette stream (the path on the left bank is much easier...).
Back on the route, we received a very warm welcome and found reasonable prices at the Ayes refreshment bar, where we were able to cool off before heading back down
At the end of August 2023, at point 8, the road to the left is closed; many vehicles are using the GR, kicking up clouds of dust as they pass.
