Description of the walk

From Briançon, head towards Villar-Saint-Pancrace to the south of the town. Head towards the mountain centre and turn left onto the Route des Ayes (D236T), which turns into a track leading towards the hamlet of Les Ayes.
At the junction and signposts, turn right towards the hamlet of Mélézin. At the next junction, turn right again. Pass Clot Des Prés and the Chalets des Prés du Vallon, then park at the side of the road at Mélézin. The track is quite long.
A high-clearance crossover-type vehicle is recommended, although it is possible with a standard car.

(S/E) At the end of the hamlet, head up the pastoral lane to the south. At around 2100m, where the lane ends, leave it and take the signposted Rose path on your left.

At around 2,136m, at the Y-junction, head up to the left. At around 2,183m, turn left again. You’ll reach a wide, flat area where the trail becomes difficult to follow. Facing the hut, head left, rejoin the well-marked path, then climb up the slope beneath the Crête du Petit Puy.

At the Plan Vallon signpost, descend into the valley to go round the grassy hill on the left, which hides the lake. Follow a path up to the right at the foot of the hill. Reach the small, often dry lake of Plan Vallon to the south-west.

(1) Cross the flat area in this direction (south-west) then climb towards the small pass through the grassy terraces until you reach the Crête de Coste Rousse.

(2) Follow it northwards to the right. Go round the rock outcrop to the left via a short traverse followed by a gentle climb. Once past it, climb up the second grassy gully to the right. Reach the highest point of the ridge, marked by a cairn.

(3) Follow the route taken on the way up to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

I recommend watching the video with the names of the peaks, which clearly shows the waypoints.
Although it is possible to navigate using a map and compass, the excellent Visorando app will make it easier here.
No technical difficulty. It’s just walking. No exposed sections, provided you take the second grassy gully and not the first.
However, the slope leading up to the ridge is particularly steep. You’ll need to zigzag across the grassy terraces and take breaks.
Due to this final difficulty, I rate the route as upper-medium difficulty.

A lovely little hike, but the view is well worth the detour. Once we reached the small summit of the Crête de Coste Rousse, we carried on to what we thought was the summit of the Crête de Coste Rousse – but in fact, we were on the summit of the Pic de Roche Motte! So, if you want to reach the summit of Pic de Roche Motte, be careful, as the route to it goes to the left (west) through an exposed area with loose rocks. Stay cautious or give up.

A lovely hike that starts off a bit steeply, but the rest is picturesque and climbs gently enough up to the shepherd’s hut; a short, steep section leads to the las (dry except in spring),
The final section is a real wall! There’s no path, just sheep tracks; take your time or you might end up giving up! But the reward is well worth the effort! A sublime, almost 360° view – absolutely stunning.
Walking poles are strongly recommended.

A lovely hike in stunning surroundings. Not very busy (no doubt because of the access road), so it’s very peaceful. The description is spot on, as is the accompanying video: it’s impossible to get lost. Just a quick note: the final climb up to the small pass is tougher than it looks in the video. The slope is quite steep and can be slippery (best avoided in wet weather). Walking poles are very useful for this section (I don’t usually use them). The view from the top is magnificent.

A lovely, varied walk through the forest and across some beautiful valleys. Highly recommended.
