Description of the walk

Park in the hamlet of Les Sagnes, which is a peatland

(S/E) At the village entrance sign, “Les Sagnes”, follow the tarmac road up to the corner of the large house on the right (opposite, you can see the Clocher des Tourmente). Continue right for 20 m and take the first path on the right between the houses in the hamlet. Follow this path, pass a ruined building, go past a trough (or what remains of it) and then, at the cross, turn sharply left and continue slightly uphill to reach the crossroads just before the Croix du Peyrou.

(1) Continue right along this road, pass the Croix du Peyrou and you will then come to a T-junction.

(2) Continue straight ahead, then take the right-hand path at the three-way junction that follows. Descend slightly to the Ravin des Pradelles, then climb back up through the woods before descending again to reach a junction of three tracks and theGR®® route.

(3) Ignore the tracks and take the path on the right markedGR®® and signposted “le Tour du Mont Lozère”, which heads towards the bottom of the valley. Continue downhill, cross another valley and continue along the hillside until you reach the hamlet of Auriac.

(4) Cross the hamlet and continue left along theGR®® trail, following the red and white markings. You will reach a trail junction on a flat stretch.

(5) Leave theGR®® here and turn right onto the path. Continue the climb through the Bois du Peyrou. Leave the woods and finish the climb at the Y-junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Head back along the outward route in the opposite direction to the left, then return to the Croix du Peyrou junction.

(1) Turn onto the path on the right and continue the descent to return to the Clocher de Tourmente car park on the peatland at Les Sagnes (S/E).

I’d seen the bell towers on a longer hike… this one covers some of the same ground and has fewer bell towers, but it’s just as enjoyable when you’re short on time
The path isn’t very well signposted in the forest for the descent into the valley before Les Sagnoles… the GR is poorly signposted, in a single direction which isn’t the one for the hike; what’s more, it’s very narrow and ends in a stream. To make matters worse, there were forestry works with machinery
Mind the season… in autumn you can take a less steep alternative route that winds down in a zigzag

A lovely walk with a variety of scenery.
We had trouble finding the starting point, but the Visorando guide confirmed that we were on the right track.
Note at point 3: there is indeed a path leading down, which isn’t very visible from the main track, but it’s marked with GR signs, so it’s impossible to go wrong.
We didn’t meet anyone on the trail, just some cows and a deer!

A lovely circular walk, with no major difficulties. It was a bit warm at the start, on the climb in the sun (though it must be said that the temperature for early September was exceptional), but after that there were plenty of pleasant paths through the woodland.
The hamlet of Auriac is magnificent, and the storm spires are very distinctive.

An easy and pleasant walk, well worth doing if only for the hamlet of Auriac, which is absolutely stunning. There’s a slight error in the route description at point 3: the path indicated doesn’t exist (or no longer does); it’s better to take the “Tour du Mont Lozère” at this point, which is clearly signposted.
