Depart from Manarola station, which is just outside the town.
(S/E) Head towards the mountain to reach the "Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre" office. Opposite, take the tunnel that leads to the village.
At the tunnel exit, turn right onto the street that goes uphill. It is pedestrianised and has many shops. Stroll around and take the time to look around.
Continue uphill until you see a large water wheel on your right. There are no signs, but you can easily guess that it is powered by a water supply.
(1) Continue for a few more metres until you reach a staircase on the left. Take this staircase, which climbs steeply between the houses. It's a good effort that will be rewarded (which is why it is rated "moderate" instead of "easy").
After about 100 metres, you will come to a balcony path. Take it to the left (towards the sea), admire the view of the village, and the vegetable gardens and vineyards around you.
After 250 metres along the balcony path, continue for 50 metres down the steps. There, you will need to turn left. (The path on the right is blocked and has collapsed a little further on). Continue along the path until you reach the cemetery.
(2) With discretion, you can explore it and admire the superb views of the village. 5 metres further on, take a narrow staircase on the right that leads down. You will have a breathtaking view of the harbour.
You will arrive in a tourist area. Continue down the terraces, turning right to enjoy the view of the north coast. From there, you will see the collapsed coastal path (still true in 2017).
Retrace your steps and follow the path back to the harbour. Continue to the square and then walk up the main street, renowned for its moored boats. At the top, turn left onto a short but steep slope, cross over and descend on the other side, walk less than 50 metres south and you will find the tunnel that will take you to the station (S/E).
