Circular route from Vauclaire to Montpon-Ménestérol

The Vauclaire circular route allows you to discover this place steeped in history. Largely set in woodland, it is a very pleasant walk , but be careful: a few short sections are quite technical. It offers lovely views of the Chartreuse.

Description of the walk

For this route, follow the markings carefully, looking out for the wooden posts and yellow caps. You will see smaller markers along the way; these indicate routes suggested by the Vauclaire Omnisport Club, starting from the cemetery.
Park in the visitors’ car park at Vauclaire Hospital, on Allée Françoise Dolto.

(S/E) A wooden post marked “Circular Route – servitude de marchepied” indicates the starting point. Climb the steps, cross a track and you’ll reach a junction. Continue left until you reach more steps.

(1) Climb up; then cross the meadow towards the second marker, then, 5 m further on, take the steps on your left (if you wish, you can visit the viewpoint over Vauclaire by making a round trip). At the bottom of the steps, turn left and follow the wooden posts without caps. The climb is quite technical.
At the top of the stairs, follow the sign for “Circular Walk of Vauclaire” on your left. You’ll take a well-shaded path through the heart of the Vauclaire woods. Look out for a wooden footbridge with a wire mesh on the right.

(2) Cross it, climb the stairs and continue along the narrow path until you reach a difficult climb.

(3) Follow the sign for “Circular Walk of Vauclaire”, keeping slightly to your right, where a somewhat technical climb awaits you. Continue to the end of the path.

(4) Turn slightly to the right, then continue to your left. The path splits into three. Follow the signpost to the left. Leave the climbing wall on your right, then, at the end of the path, turn right, then right again further on, and continue along the path to the cemetery.

Walk along it. When you reach the end, turn right. You will find a picnic table on your left; take thesecond path on your left and walk along the ditch.
After the short climb, turn right onto the white path. Before the end of this path, continue straight on towards the marker, then head down to your right. You will arrive at the steps you took at the start. Go straight down to return to the car park and your starting point (S/E).

The description is very good, but the markers on the map are out of place:

  • You need to place (1) at the first bend, near the start
  • then (2) in place of → (1)
  • (3) → (2)
  • (4) → (3)
  • and (5) is in the right place.

Fortunately, the marker posts are a great help in finding your way.
There are plenty of benches after (5) at the end of the route; a few at the top of the steepest climbs would have been preferable…
