Hike around Vanclans from the church. This is a walk through woods and meadows. The first open section is between Vanclans and Etray. Take care when crossing the departmental road. The route then continues along a rocky ridge in the woods above Vanclans. The walk passes by the FFI monument in Vanclans with its Liberation cross before descending back to Vanclans.

Description of the walk

Park at the church in Vanclans (car park and picnic area opposite).

Yellow markings

(S/E) Join the main road and turn left. Go behind the church, follow the path leaving the cemetery access on your left and pass under the reservoir.

(1) At the intersection, turn left onto the main road. Continue straight ahead until you reach the third crossroads.

(2) At the intersection, leave the main road by turning left. Pass a fork in the road and reach a road.

(3) Cross the district road and continue straight ahead.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left.

(5) At the intersection, follow the road slightly to the right and do not take the first path on the right.

(6) At the fork after the farm, turn left and continue to the road.

(7) Continue to the right for a few dozen metres, then join the road on the left and follow the dirt track to the right until you reach a crossroads.

(8) Leave the path and continue right on the road.

(9) At the climbing car park and its crossroads, turn left onto the forest track that climbs towards the cliffs and join a fork.

(10) Leave the forest track and take the path on the left that climbs steeply up the rocky ridge (suitable footwear essential).

(11) Leave the pasture and enter the forest on the left to reach a fork and a road.

(12) Continue right on the road until you reach the junction with the power lines.

(13) Leave the road and follow the path that leads left and then right to the FFI memorial.

(14) At the woodpile and crossroads, continue left along the downhill road to the hunting cabin.

(15) Continue on the main road to the left. Pass a junction to reach an intersection with a path.

(16) Leave the road and follow the path on the right.

(17) Back on the road, turn left. Then turn right. At the crossroads, turn right and rejoin the road.

(18) Go down to the left and ignore three forks. At the fourth fork, go left and then right to reach the church (S/E).

An easy walk with little elevation gain, starting and ending on the road and otherwise through the woods. Viewpoint developed from the Château de Cicon. This is a walking trail, but it can also be done by mountain bike or on horseback (preferably in dry, hard terrain). The route is easy.

Circuit between woods and meadows with a significant elevation gain between Athose and La Baraque. Presence of game, particularly chamois. It is best to follow the route in the suggested direction, i.e. anti-clockwise.You can start from any point, but the suggested starting point is the church in Athose.

Set off to explore the Barchet Pond and its peat bog. This vast wetland is a remarkable reservoir of biodiversity. Its soil, permanently saturated with stagnant water, deprives the microorganisms responsible for decomposing organic matter of the oxygen they need for their metabolism. The plant litter mineralises slowly and partially. It then accumulates gradually, forming a poorly decomposed or undecomposed deposit: peat.

This 10km or 15km hike will take you to Crêt Monniot (1141m) where, on a clear day, a superb 360° panorama awaits you: lomont, the Loue valley, the Jura plateaus, the Vosges, Mont Blanc and the Bernese Alps. You will love this landscape of chaux (the medieval name for high-altitude wasteland) with its sinkholes and sharp limestone pavement.

Walk around Hautepierre-le-Châtelet, with access to the summit of La Roche, views of the Alps and the Loue Valley.
