Circular Sous-Dine loop via the Passage du Monthieu

The Sous-Dîne plateau, whose summit is just under 2,000 m, offers a magnificent view of the cliffs that form it. The Aravis and Mont Blanc massifs seem close enough to touch.

Description of the walk

After the hamlet of Mont Piton, head towards Les Cheneviers and park in the car park at the end of the road.

(S/E) From the car park, follow signs for “Sous-Dîne”, “Col de l’Enclave” and “Passage du Monthieu”.
Continue left along the forest track, which climbs fairly steeply to the junction of the circular route (alt. 1,390 m).

(1) Ignore the return route ahead (Col de l'Enclave) and turn left towards "Sous-Dine via the Passage du Monthieu". The forest road offers a gentler climb up to the Combe d'Arembeau.

(2) Keep to your right towards Sous-Dine. The fairly wide path at the start of the valley narrows after the right-hand bend.

(3) Pass another path on your left coming from Mont Piton. Continue to the right (south). Two sections with ropes (not too difficult on this side of the climb) lead to the Passage du Monthieu.

(4) The route then continues to the plateau, skirting the cliffs where the view is certainly magnificent but where there is a risk. You’ll reach a fork.

(5) There are still 100 m to go before you reach the cross marking the highest point of Sous-Dîne. Enjoy the view of the cliffs, the Aravis and Mont Blanc massifs, and the chamois.

(6) Return to the previous fork.

(5) Turn left, south-west, for the descent via the Col de l'Enclave. The descent is interesting through the lappiaz formed by the erosion of limestone. You will reach a crossroads (alt. 1,770 m).

(7) Keep to the right to reach, through the forest, the Route des Cheneviers before the Col de l'Enclave.

(8) Leave the mountain road on your right and take the path on the left leading to the Chalet de l'Artu and the Col de l'Enclave (alt. 1495 m).

(9) Follow the path to the right, heading due north, which rejoins the mountain road you left earlier. Continue left along this road and return to the original junction.

(1) Follow the path in the opposite direction to the outward journey to reach the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike, true to the description and route, and very easy to follow. I did it on the last Sunday in August, and there were lots of people on the paths and trails. Magnificent!

Magnificent hike.
The climb through the forest may seem a little long, but what a reward when you start to reach the "plateau". The passages are all very safe with ropes in case of need.
Magnificent 360-degree views with an elevation gain of 897 metres, as advertised. Perfect.
Peaks as far as the eye can see: Mont Pourri, Barre des Ecrins, Mont Buet, La Grande Casse and, of course, Mont Blanc.
The icing on the cake: an encounter with a young, friendly and very photogenic chamois!

Very good route, to be followed in the direction described; the section with handrails is relatively safe, but take care if using this route on the descent in foggy, wet or windy conditions.
A beautiful reward at the summit with jackdaws and Mont Blanc

A truly beautiful and varied hike, taking in woodland, sharp limestone pavement, grassy plateaus, and literally teeming with stunning, unafraid ibex.
Easy to follow but with a greater elevation gain than indicated by the route creator – 1004 m for me – and rewarded with a stunning 360° view!
The Monthieux section is no problem as it’s not particularly steep.
In short, a lovely hike with no particular features other than the pleasure of nature and the views.
