Sathonay-Village circular route via Vancia and Rillieux

Park in the car park at the town hall grounds.

(S/E) From the car park, head west past the church and cross the road.

(1) Walk down the Chemin des Combes to the old Lyon–Trévoux railway line, then follow it, passing above the Moreau mill

(2) Cross the second bridge under the railway line on the right and head north up Chemin de la Forêt.

(3) Cross the Chemin des Épinettes and, on the right, head uphill along the edge of the field running alongside the Chemin de la Combe, then continue straight on along the Chemin de Jambe de Loup.

(4) Carry on along the Chemin des Églantines and the Chemin des Diligences, then straight on into a cul-de-sac.

(5) Cross the Route de Castellane with care and continue to the right along the Chemin de Riveau.

(6) Pass under the TGV railway line and continue straight on along the track through the fields. Follow the Lyon–Bourg-en-Bresse railway line to the north.

(7) You can take a shortcut by going under the bridge; otherwise, carry on to a level crossing, cross it and head southwards along the track until you reach the road (Chemin de Sathonay-Village to Rosage).

(8) Turn left (watch out for traffic), then take the track on the right, heading due south, and turn into the second track on the right after the bend.

(9) Turn onto the second track on the left (Chemin des Epaloux), running alongside the fence of the military site, and turn right onto the road (Chemin de Bellegarde).

(10) Turn left onto Avenue Jean Moulin, then left onto Route de Strasbourg and take the first right onto Chemin de Vancia at Mas Rillier.

(11) After crossing the motorway, take the track on the right (due south) and, at the D143 roundabout, take the Chemin de Sermenaz and rejoin the track running alongside the motorway. Go under the motorway to reach the Route de Genève, where you’ll find a car park.

(12) Turn right towards Lyon, then take the second street on the right, the Chemin de la Teyssonnière. Follow it northwards to the entrance of the Parc de Sermonaz and cross through it.

(13) On leaving the park, turn right onto Chemin de la Teyssonnière. Cross Avenue de l’Europe with care and continue on to Avenue des Nations, which you follow to the right until you reach Route du Mas Rillier, where you turn left for a few dozen metres.

(14) Turn right onto Chemin de la Croix, then left onto Rue Maryse Bastié (D45).

(15) Take the hairpin bend to the right onto Chemin de Vancia à Pinet and continue straight on along Chemin de Neyron.

(16) Cross the road to Strasbourg with care, heading towards the Chemin de Sathonay-Village. At the roundabout, turn right onto the Chemin de Belle Garde.

(10) Turn left onto the footpath alongside Fort de Vancia and walk alongside the fort.

(17) Turn left onto the path running alongside Fort de Vancia and walk alongside the fort.

(18) At the western end, turn left onto the track leading to the TGV railway line and follow it due south to the bridge. Turn right onto Route de Vancia and, after the bridge, turn left. Follow the track to Chemin de la Villotière.

(19) Turn left onto Rue Saint Maurice, then turn right at the entrance to the Sathonay-Village town hall grounds and arrive at the starting car park (S/E).

(7) A shortcut is possible by going under the bridge.

Vancia Fort forms part of the defence line built to protect the city of Lyon following the defeat of 1870.
It was never used and was decommissioned in 1914.
This fort now houses an adventure park, the facilities of which can be seen as you walk alongside it.
