Circular route from Saint-Hippolyte to Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse

A short, fairly hilly walk with some lovely views over the valley, a few famous castles and a steep climb.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Saint-Hippolyte church.

(S/E) Take the north-west road towards Château Ferrand. Go round the château and continue along the road to the crossroads.

(1) Turn right for 80m then left onto the first path through the vineyards. At the end of the plot, continue right towards the hamlet of Tourans. At the entrance, take the path on the left, pass between the buildings and continue straight on until you reach a wood.

(2) Once you reach the woodland, take a short detour along a path on the right leading to the viewpoint and its magnificent view over the valley.
On the way back, take the path on the right which descends towards Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Once at the bottom, go round the schools on the left and join the D245.

(3) At the wayside shrine, cross the road (very busy). At the junction at the end of the plot, opposite the hamlet of Justice, take the path on the right towards the hamlet of Giraud. Cross the road, pass the hamlet of Trapaud and reach the crossroads at the hamlet of Guillemin.

(4) Turn right and join the D245. Turn left for a few metres, then take the path on the right. After the house, take the path on the left, cross the vineyards and then climb the zigzagging path.

(5) Once at the top, go round the vineyards, keeping the woods on your left. Join the road at the hamlet of Le Niort.

(6) Continue to the left, ignore the next road on the right and take the first path on the right.

(7) To avoid following the road, take this path and turn left at the first junction. Go straight on to the end between the vineyards, then turn right. You will reach the church car park (S/E).

Notes

This route takes you off the beaten track; all the landmarks mentioned in the description (localities, castles, high-voltage power lines, bridges, etc.) are shown on the corresponding IGN 1:25,000 map but are not always included on the scaled-down map.
It is strongly recommended that you either obtain the aforementioned map or use the app on a smartphone, which will also allow you to be geolocated at all times and thus track your movements accurately.
The route may cross or follow other marked trails. It is tempting to follow the markers! Unless otherwise specified, do not stray from the route.
Using walking poles can prove very useful: as well as providing stability, they help distribute the strain.

A very pleasant walk, described as clearly as ever by the author, whom we would like to thank.
However, we ran into a problem and were unable to reach point 5.
At point 4, on the climb between the vineyards, we came to a plot of vines consisting of several rows (6 or 7) running across, between which we zigzagged. At the top, it was impossible to find the exit towards point 5. Perhaps there was too much vegetation blocking the way. We went back down a little and followed the path past the ruined chapel to reach Maurens. The rest of the way was fine. A lovely walk with beautiful scenery.

In point 6, it should be made clear that you should not go straight ahead, but rather turn right as indicated, as the towpath continues and is very pleasant – except for the fact that it ends at a farm!!!

Stunning scenery!
We walked with all our children (the youngest is 7) and everyone was delighted.
The only downside: a winegrower was treating his plot (between points 4 and 5 before the zigzags) and we didn’t know if he was organic.

A very pleasant walk, with clear signposting.
The route between points 4 and 5 must have changed slightly (you have to go round a small patch of vineyard on the right before taking the zigzagging climb), but we soon found our way.
