Description of the walk

The walk starts at Porte Brunet, east of Saint-Émilion. Parking is available nearby.

(S/E) Head west and, at the first junction, after a few metres, before the first house, take the Escalette du Guetteur by going down a few steps. This small passage used to lead to Rue Guadet but is now closed off. This staircase, which follows the line of the fortifications along the rock face, offers a lovely view of the town. Retrace your steps.

Cross Rue la Porte Brunet and head straight ahead into Impasse des Cordeliers. Wind your way between the houses until you reach a left-hand bend. You will then find yourself back on Rue de la Porte Brunet. At the end of the passage, turn left.

Just past the house at No. 9, take the Escalette André Goudicheau, which descends to the right. You’ll come out onto Rue Guadet. This is the narrowest and probably the most hidden passage. Walk down Rue Guadet to the left for a few metres and take the passage on the right which runs alongside the platform offering a beautiful view of the town.

Go down the grand staircase. Note the houses of medieval origin on either side. Keep the King’s Tower in your sights as it gradually comes into view. Continue straight on until you reach Rue de la Petite Fontaine. Follow it to the left and turn immediately right to cross the car park to the wash house.

(1) Turn right to go round it on the right. Continue straight on, following the terraced buildings. Turn left and then left again; there is a lovely view over the large wash house. Head up to the right via the Escalette Panet, which joins Rue Couvent.

Head down Rue du Couvent to the left until it meets Rue de la Porte Saint-Marie. A few metres further on, opposite No. 31, turn left onto Escalette de la Porte Saint-Marie. This leads via a flight of steps to Rue André Loiseau, which you follow along Rue de la Tourelle.

(2) Opposite a white gate, turn left into the Passage de la Tourelle. On either side, you’ll notice vegetable gardens, the last remaining within the city walls. Turn left onto Rue des Jurats and, a little further up, take the staircase on the right. Cross Rue Guadet and take the next staircase on the other side, which leads to Rue de la Liberté. Turn right to return to Rue de la Porte Brunet and then to our starting point, Porte Brunet (S/E).

A lovely little walk off the beaten track! I did it on a Saturday morning, even though it was during the Philosophia festival in St-Émilion, but it was surprisingly quiet and I was on my own on most of the stairways. Stunning views all round! I’m saving it as a favourite so I can recommend it to friends when they come to visit the area. It’s much nicer than the usual route of the town.

The village is small but very busy (apparently far too busy in summer). This route through the narrow streets is a real treat!
You climb up and down empty alleyways, admiring the scenery from vantage points little known to tourists....
Pure bliss!

The description is missing a few details for those unfamiliar with the town. Furthermore, Mr Mayor of Saint-Émilion, the names of the stairways are listed at one end but not the other; for example, the André Godinneau stairway and the Porte Sainte-Marie stairway. But with a bit of searching, one can find one’s way around.
