Description of the walk

Departure from the car park of the church in the village of Estantens.

(S/E) Head south on Rue de l'Église. At the end of this street, turn left/right and continue south on Chemin du Pontil. At the three-way junction, take the left branch and go around the residential area, keeping it on your left. At the end of this road, you will come to a fork in the path.

(1) Turn right and climb up to the Chapel of Saint-Amans, crossing the old stone bridge. The climb is steep with some roots, steps and ravines. There is a panoramic view at the top of the hill.

(2) Continue along the road until you reach a beautiful shaded path on the right.

(3) Follow it and join the ridge line (GR® signposts). You will reach the top of a hill (superb panoramic view of the Pyrenees).

(4) Continue along the path and descend into the valley. At the road, continue to the right and find, on the left, the start of a grassy path at the end of the right-hand bend, under a power line.

(5) Follow this path and enter the forest. After about 100 metres, turn right and descend to the fields. Pass under the power line and use the passageway for agricultural machinery to cross to the other side of the field. Reach the Garonne.

(6) Turn right and head towards the ferry and its house. Note the surprising sign showing the height of the Garonne flood. Continue along the road until you reach a crossroads with a small car park.

(7) Take the path on the left and continue along the trail that runs alongside the river through unspoilt countryside. This section also features roots, ravines and steps. At the road, continue left until you reach the discreet start of the botanical trail on the left.

(8) Follow this discreet path on the left of the cherry tree, then continue along the Garonne until you reach a fork near a playground on the right and a few easy steps.

(9) Turn right, go up Estanten and take the next street on the right, then the one on the left to reach the church car park (S/E).

Route taken after lunch at the picnic area (2 tables and benches) in the Aouach car park, as indicated in the description of the "Coteaux de l'Aouach" hike in an anti-clockwise direction. This route is identical but continues to Estantens.
Unfortunately, the foggy weather meant that visibility was poor in the distance.
The descents are tricky but not very slippery on slightly damp ground. They would certainly be very difficult in wet weather, when walking sticks and mountain boots might be necessary.
The route is obvious but was completed with the help of GPS.

A circular route with an initial uphill section to a cultivated plateau, followed by a downhill section and then flat terrain along the wild banks of the Garonne. The route description for the first part could perhaps be improved as there are numerous forks, and it is probably best to recommend doing this walk in dry weather, as on 19 May 2024, after the rains of the previous days, the second part was quite muddy and a bit of a pain... This means you'll need to give your shoes a good clean when you get back. Perfect for keeping fit as it's suitable for everyone: modest elevation gain, very average length and duration. Thanks to the trailblazer.

Some sections do not exist, but we still managed to get through thanks to Google Maps and significant detours.
I would not recommend this route.
I was also very surprised to see that the Via Garona, which we follow for part of the route, is clearly not signposted (unlike the Via Podiensis, for example, which is particularly well signposted).

The directions and map are fairly clear, but from time to time you have to check them several times because the paths are not all very well marked (lots of tall grass, etc.).
The first part, mostly in the sun, offers a superb panorama, and the second part, mostly along the banks of the Garonne in the undergrowth, is pleasantly refreshing.
Two atmospheres that complement each other very well... The only downside, and it's a big one, is that we spent our time watching our dogs and removed no less than a hundred ticks from them!
That can be off-putting!

The walk is lovely! Despite the recent drought, some sections are muddy, even very muddy. Clearly, the path along the Garonne is also used by mountain bikes and, more annoyingly, motocross bikes!

A lovely, enjoyable family hike with very varied landscapes. Pleasant banks of the Garonne.
Note that there is a very muddy section (it was January and it had rained recently).
