Park in the car park near the entrance to the canal tunnel, in front of the small grotto.
(S/E) Walk back up a few metres and look for a gap in the castle’s outer wall. Go through it and follow the riverbank. Look up to see the castle perched on its rocky outcrop. Continue until you reach the houses.
(1) Turn right onto the lovely path that takes you back to the water’s edge. Go under the railway bridge and walk alongside the military camp on your left. You’ll cross concrete ramps leading down to the river; these are the access ramps for Ponts Gillois, the company that builds movable bridges for crossing rivers. Opposite is the Convent of Bethany.
Continue along the route as close as possible to the river, go under the railway line again and head for the bridge over the lock.
(2) Cross the bridge and turn left in front of the house. Now follow the canal bank and go through the lit tunnel. After the exit, continue to the right, still along the canal.
(3) When you reach the Garde Lock Bridge, head straight on along EuroVelo 6. Admire the ruins of the medieval castle of Montferrand on the cliffs opposite, and behind you to the right and above, the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Mont.
(4) Leave the cycle route by taking a lovely white path at the corner of an orchard. Cross this small plain and look out for a path leading into the woods on your right.
(5) Continue straight on for about 200 m to enjoy the site of the Pierre de Vorges and its ford.
(6) Turn back to rejoin the woodland path on the left.
(5) Turn left and follow it all the way. Join a larger path leading down from the Notre-Dame du Mont chapel and turn right to reach the canal at the Écluse de Garde de Thoraise bridge.
(3) Cross the canal, walk past the industrial wasteland and follow the bank to reach the car park (S/E).
