Hautecourt Cave Loop

Short loop passing through the Hautecourt Cave Nature Reserve. Hike with no technical difficulty, alternating between woodland and open spaces. The climb up to the Mont Rosset plateau is a little steep, watch out for cows, but you'll be rewarded at the end. Please note that the cave itself is not open to visitors, even though it was France's first underground nature reserve in 1980. Don't be disappointed, though, as there are a dozen information panels on the surface explaining the cave's biodiversity and its exploration in the past. For those interested, there is a 3D tour on the LPO Aura website.

Description of the walk

Park in the designated spaces on Route de Cize. Other parking is available near the church.

(S/E) Head towards the church, then turn left onto Chemin de la Croix Peyrousse, towards the hamlet of Soiriat. At the crossroads, turn left, then right to follow Chemin sous la Roche.

(1) Take the track on the left, then go up the small path. Cross two cattle grids.

(2) Just after the second one, turn right to follow a narrow path, which is visible in places and occasionally marked with yellow signs. The climb alternates between woodland and very open sections. When you reach a T-junction, turn left and start a steep climb.

(3) Cross the road carefully and continue climbing through the forest. The path is much better marked. Walk slowly through the undergrowth until you reach the summit of Mont Rosset.

(4) Turn right onto a forest path that leads to the small plateau at the top of Mont Rosset. Reach the summit of Mont Rosset, where cows graze (in season). Ideally, take the short path on the left to pass the gate without dismantling it.

(5) Turn left: there are no markings as the area is bare, but you will see two small cairns indicating the direction. Enter the small forest and continue until you reach the cave.

(6) This is where you will explore and find 10 information panels, located vertically in the different rooms of the cave. There are some explanations about the formation, exploration and fauna. Then descend along a barbed wire fence on the left to discover the entrance to the cave, which is closed, and the last information panel. Continue along the trail, heading south, and return to the road you crossed earlier. Follow it, turning right, for about 250 m.

(7) Turn left onto a shaded path and return to the double cattle grid you crossed on the way there.

(2) Continue straight ahead and retrace your steps to return to Soiriat.

(1) Turn right, then left to follow Chemin du Lavoir (a pretty wash house, by the way), then turn right and left to take Chemin de la Messe, which leads to Route de Cize.

(8) Turn right and continue straight ahead to arrive at the church and the car park (S/E).

Hike completed in early November with beautiful autumn colours.
A very pleasant walk, not difficult but a lovely circular route.
The viewpoint over the Suran valley is very nice.

A lovely, partially shaded route with views of the mountains and a passage through the entrance to the cave (closed). The route has a gentle incline, making it accessible for families and beginners.
Beginners should follow the GPS track carefully, as it is very reliable but some intersections are missing. However, it is not confusing!

A beautiful, easy hike (easy to follow, little elevation gain, 2 hours) with lots of interesting things to see. The 10 information panels are particularly interesting, clear and informative.
