From the Gèle to Monluc

A pleasant walk starting from the village of Saint-Puy, crossing the Gèle stream – a tributary of the Baïse – several times. The route offers beautiful views of the villages of Saint-Puy, La Sauvetat and Mas d’Auvignon. No major difficulties, but a lovely way to explore the Gers countryside.

Description of the walk

Park on Avenue René Lassus, near the Salle des Fêtes, using the designated spaces.

(S/E) Head towards the main road (Avenue de la Lomagne). Follow it to the left for a good hundred metres.

(1) Cross at the pedestrian crossing to take Avenue Claude Bordenave. Walk along the housing estate on your left and continue straight on to cross the Gèle.

(2) Immediately afterwards, take the dirt track on the left, which makes a first turn right then left and leads onto the D236.

(3) First turn left then right to join the dirt track that runs alongside the houses at Las Tapies. Go straight on.

(4) Continue to the right, then go straight on until you reach the corner of the vineyard. Then turn left at a 90° angle and head towards a crossroads.

(5) Turn left again and continue, making sure to keep heading in the same direction.

(6) Cross a small road and then the RD23, taking care, and rejoin the path opposite.

(7) Cross the Gèle via the small bridges and continue straight on, cutting across a road, until you reach a stream.

(8) Cross the stream and turn left to follow it. Pass a small reservoir, then turn right at a right angle to join the RD654.

(9) First turn right then left to join the Chemin de la Lanne. Take the path on the left, before the hamlet, then turn right and finally left to rejoin the RD654. Turn right onto the uphill path, continue straight on along the access road to Liébé and emerge onto the D42.

(10) Cross with care and continue straight ahead. Go straight on at the junction, pass in front of Château Monluc, then head down to the left along Boulevard de la Porte Baron to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

In hot weather, it is best to do this walk in the morning or late in the day. Do feel free to stop for a break at a place called Courties (7) in the shade of the oak trees along the banks of the Gèle.

Worth a visit

If you’ve decided to have a picnic, you can do your shopping in the village, where you’ll find bread and other food at the convenience store (offering a range of services including groceries, tobacco, newspapers, fuel, etc.). Or perhaps you’d prefer to have lunch at one of the two restaurants in the village...

A very pleasant and easy walk with plenty of well-maintained paths, and a lovely picnic by the little bridge over the frozen river halfway along the route

A lovely walk through fields and copses. The best time to do it seems to be in spring or autumn, or early in the morning in summer. It can get quite muddy near the streams and there’s little shade on the first part of the walk. The bridges are very pretty, as is the view! The walk is signposted with yellow signs bearing its name. The village is also a lovely place to visit and ideal for a drink after the walk.

A very well-signposted, easy walk, mainly along paths with superb views, passing through vineyards, alongside a stream and through small woods; 10 km covered in 2 hours and 18 minutes.
