The village of Cucuron has several car parks; the start of the hike is by the lake, the village’s iconic landmark.
(S/E) Walk along the lake following Rue Bérard du Roure and head towards the Hermitage Chapel (yellow markings). Pass the school complex and reach the crossroads at the corner of the sports ground.
(1) Continue along the left-hand track, following the yellow markings and signposts to reach the pretty Hermitage Chapel.
(2) Pass it on the left to reach a wide track.
(3) Take this track to the left. At the next junction, stay on the track on the left which runs along the mountainside to a hairpin bend where there is an underground cistern.
(4) Leave the track by heading up the slope to the right. The first few metres are poorly marked but a lovely balcony path soon emerges. Reach the bottom of a small valley which you will need to climb up until you reach a clear, open area and the wide track forming part of theGRP® Tour du Luberon.
(5) Do not join thisGRP® but take the track furthest to the left and head up towards a large meadow. Cross this meadow, ignoring the most clearly marked tracks and heading for the edge of the woodland directly opposite. Find the opening in the track and descend through the woodland to join theGR®9.
(6) Take it to the left, heading due south, and follow the red and white markings to reach the entrance to the village of Vaugines. Take the opportunity here to spend some time exploring the village.
(7) Cross the village, go round Saint-Barthélémy Church on the left and reach the Vallis Jovina signpost at the village exit.
(8) Turn right onto the old Chemin de Cucuron. When you reach the D56, turn left onto it for a few metres to find the Guet signpost.
(9) Take the Chemin du Cagnard downhill to reach the village of Cucuron. Be sure to climb up to the ramparts and the Saint-Michel keep, which overlooks the village, before heading back down through the narrow streets of the old village to reach the Étang (S/E).
