Silvacane Abbey circular route via Rocher du Castellas

An alternative route around La Roque-d'Anthéron with a 300 m climb to the Rocher du Castellas, which we did not want to go to the end of for safety reasons, although it is quite possible without difficulty (if you are careful). The view from the top is worth the trip.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Silvacane Abbey, at the entrance to La Roque-d'Anthéron.

(S/E) Head east on the PR® footpath that runs alongside the road until you reach a fork.

(1) Cross carefully to take the DFCI track opposite on the other side of the road. Begin the climb. Enjoy the beautiful views on the left over the Saint-Christophe basin a little higher up. You will reach cistern 186.

(2) Continue straight ahead downhill, after admiring a beautiful view of the southern side of the Chaîne des Côtes. Reach the fork at cistern 182.

(3) Take the rightmost downhill track and arrive at a crossroads in a hairpin bend.

(4) Turn left at this crossroads. Continue for 1,500 metres, staying on the track. You will reach a Y-junction; continue straight ahead and you will find the start of a well-marked path.

(5) Take it on the right to reach a summit offering a panoramic view.

(6) Return in the opposite direction to the previous crossroads.

(5) Turn right and follow the track downhill until you reach a crossroads with a memorial stone.

(7) Keep right, continue downhill and then join Rue Jean Giono.

(8) Turn right, then take Carraire des Trissonnes on the left and follow it to the bridge over the Canal de Marseille.

(9) Go down to the right along the canal. Follow it for 500 metres.

(10) Go down the embankment and up Rue Paul Verlaine. Take the pedestrian crossing directly opposite and you will arrive at Boulevard de la Paix.

(11) Turn right and follow it for about 600 metres.

(12) Go up Avenue de Silvacane on the left for 60 metres to take the footpath to the abbey. Head east for 300 metres to return to the car park (S/E).
