Description of the walk

The easiest way is to start from the Étang Chabaud-Latour car park. Alternatively, to make things simple, enter the restaurant "La Guinguette du Lac" into your satnav as your destination. Parking is generally easy, including at weekends and during holidays.

(S/E) Start by taking a path on the right, which is higher than the road running alongside the lake. Head to the right to reach a bridge offering an interesting view of the lake and the Fosse Ledoux headframe.

(1) Then descend on the same side and continue along the pond, passing in front of the motorbike club's tracks.

(2) At the first intersection, turn left to continue along the pond.

(3) Turn right to continue along the paved path. Leave Chabaud-Latour here and head towards the Fosse Ledoux headframe. Pass in front of La Roselière café.

(4) At the intersection, leave the paved road and take the path that starts opposite, behind a wooden fence. Pass by the Fosse Ledoux headframe and continue to the pond.

(5) Turn right, then left, to walk alongside it for about a hundred metres. Then take the path that quickly appears on the right, which goes around the slag heap. At the next fork, follow the path on the right to continue along it and arrive at a crossroads.

(6) Turn completely left, then keep right at the next fork to arrive at a crossroads at the Marais de la Canarder.

(7) Continue straight ahead on Rue du Courbois, passing several fields and farms, including Ferme Blanchard. Reach the T-junction on the French-Belgian border and continue left onto Route de Bernissart (D102).

(8) Turn right onto a farm track called Chemin de la Truie. This starts just after a bus stop, right next to a black house gate. Continue straight ahead, cross the border and you will reach the Chapelle Saint-Hubert chapel at the entrance to the town.

(9) Continue straight ahead to admire the Machine à Feu on your left, or even continue on to the Iguanodon Museum on the same street.

(10) Return to the chapel.

(9) Turn right to follow the straight path that marks the border.

(11) Turn right again at the intersection with Avenue Sainte-Calixte to enter the Bonsecours Forest. Continue straight ahead until you reach the second crossroads.

(12) Take the path that starts opposite, slightly to the left.

(13) When you see the road and a car park, turn left to continue through the forest. You will then arrive at the Maison de la Forêt: free access to toilets and a water fountain, drinks available for purchase. Just behind, the benches in the playground offer the opportunity to take a break for a meal.

(14) Continue straight ahead until you reach the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours, which you can visit during opening hours and outside of services. There are many restaurants and shops on the avenue on the right, if needed.

(15) Turn left to head back down towards France, staying on the left-hand side of the road on the cycle path (take care). Continue straight ahead on the road to the intersection with the forest path marked by the sign with junction point 86.

(16) Follow the forest path that starts on the left. Note the two barriers: take the path that starts behind the second one.

(17) Once back on the road, turn right.

(18) When you reach a wayside cross, take the road on the left which descends and narrows into a small paved path. Pass a pond on your right and you will immediately reach a crossroads.

(19) Turn right, then go straight ahead to walk along the Étang de la Digue Noire. Walk carefully along the road and take the footpath on the left, next to the pond, as soon as it appears. You will reach a car park.

(20) Leave the Étang de la Digue Noire and head right, carefully crossing the road. Continue right on a footpath that starts behind two rocks and runs along the entire length of the Étang Chabaud-Latour to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The La Roselière café at the start of the route, as well as the Maison de la Forêt and the many shops in Péruwelz, offer places to eat along the route.

Be careful when arriving in Péruwelz: you may be tempted to visit the Château de l'Hermitage on the other side of the road between Condé-sur-l'Escaut and Péruwelz, but it is abandoned and the surrounding area is very dangerous. Exploring this side of the road is therefore strictly prohibited.

Be sure to check the hunting season dates. The route passes through hunting areas. The dates are posted just after La Roselière.

A very beautiful walk, very well described at the start, but then difficult to follow after the basilica. Point 84 was well marked, but after that there was no longer any correspondence, which was a shame! We lost a good hour trying to find our way again, thanks to the help of some locals we met!
