Description of the walk

Park in the Froideval car park.

Yellow Ring markings.

(S/E) Walk down the cul-de-sac and cross the Haute-Saône Canal.

(1) Turn right onto the path that crosses the River La Douce and climbs into the forest. (Do not take the green corridor that runs alongside the canal). Halfway up the climb, look out for the crossroads at a hairpin bend in the path.

(2) Turn left. Cross the forest and, after passing under a power line, you’ll reach the first houses of Botans. Pass four small streets on your right and turn right towards Dorans on the D9 Rue de Dorans.

(3) Pass in front of the Botans Agricultural Museum. Continue straight on, crossing the bridge over the N1019 expressway.

(4) Immediately afterwards, turn left and take a path that runs alongside the expressway below.

(5) When you reach the D18, turn left, go under the expressway and over the A36 motorway.

(6) Turn left immediately after the motorway and then left again to follow the Coulée Verte, which runs alongside the Canal de la Haute Saône.

Note: You can take a short detour to see the canal bridge crossing the Savoureuse. In this case, at point 6, take the Coulée Verte on the right heading south. The canal bridge is 200 m away. Then retrace your steps.

(7) Cross the D9 Rue du Port and take the road opposite to go under the A36 motorway. Continue straight on until the first bridge over the canal you passed on the way out.

(1) Do not go under the bridge but veer slightly left, then turn right to cross over the canal and return to the starting car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Botans Agricultural Museum.
Housed in a farmhouse dating from 1830, this museum showcases the development of agricultural machinery over the past 200 years, as well as all the tools of yesteryear: 100 machines and 1,700 objects (veterinary instruments, horse-drawn carriages, bread-making equipment, and apparatus for producing brandy and apple juice). A vegetable garden features local plants: wormwood, horseradish and angelica.

Haute-Saône Canal and Green Corridor
The route offers the chance to discover the considerable engineering works involved in the construction of the canal, carried out between the late19th and early20th centuries. At Froideval, after crossing the bridge, you will discover ‘the Coulée Verte’, the western bank of the canal from Montbéliard to the Haute-Saône.
The canal was intended to link the Rhône-Rhine Canal to the Haute-Saône.
The declaration of public utility for the canal, signed by the Minister of Public Works, C. de Freycinet, dates from 1879. Construction work began in 1883. Aninth attempt to fill the canal from the Champagney Reservoir took place in 1933. As water losses were enormous, it was decided to abandon the project.
Details of the canal’s construction are set out in Pierre Klinger’s book.

Just before leaving the canal, you can take a detour of about 400 m there and back, which allows you to discover, near the village of Bermont, the remarkable construction of the Canal Bridge over the Savoureuse with Lock No. 5.

The walk is, in a way, divided into two parts. One section runs close to major roads, so there is some noise pollution, but we aren’t actually walking on the road, so it remains pleasant if you can ignore the noise. The second section is in the forest, where you’re cut off from the outside world and can enjoy the cool air, the beauty of the autumn leaves on the ground – in short, nature!
Personally, I’ll definitely do it again… but perhaps at the weekend for a bit more peace and quiet.

A lovely, easy walk. From point 5, a short detour via Bermont and back along the greenway. There’s a bit too much tarmac now that the greenway path has been resurfaced. It’s great for cyclists, but not so much for walkers!

A pleasant walk. It’s a bit noisy along the 2-kilometre stretch of green corridor running parallel to the motorway and the A19.

Hello.
Very disappointing, far too much driving and too much noise from the motorway; also, when setting off from Froideval, it’s difficult to find the starting point; otherwise, the walk is easy with no particular difficulties; I’d recommend doing this walk on a Sunday for a quieter experience.
Kind regards
